What I've learned to do for the past couple of months is, let my XBL sub run out and wait until they have ads showing on the dashboard. Usually it'll say "$1 for 1 month", "$2 for 2 months" or sometimes "$10 for 3 months". I just turn off Auto Renewal and wait for the deals to pop up. Usually don't take more than a couple of days. I just got the $2 deal recently.
