What Should I Do on Vacation?

Go to the Pearl Harbor NCO Club, civies are fine, order a MaiTai and sit back and watch Mary Wilson concert. It's what I did.

The Red Sand Beach in Hana Town
by AKtravelers
Lots of people drive the road to Hana, but few stop in Hana Town to make the tricky trek to the red sand beach. We stopped there for lunch, managing to down our sandwiches before a cold north rain drove us off the sand. It trulyis red, though it has some black grains mixed in to add a little peppery flavor. We shared the beach with only a few other people, including an old hippy like guy who looked like he had been sitting in the same place since 1969 -- maybe his buzz was just wearing off! less [-]

Awsome Snorkeling!!
by Mstudwell
I've been to Maui multiple times so I've been to almost every snorkeling place on the island, but this off the beaten path location is my absolute favorite! It's a long and a little bit difficult hike (on volcanic rock). It's right near the Nakalele Blowhole, (website below), and actually that how we found it, but site seeing at Nakalele and watching people cutting down a beaten path just off of the road. It's hard to say where the exact entrance is since, there really is no official gate, just a few paths that head west right before you enter the parking lot for Nakalele. The hike itself to the location is also noteworthy, and it's about a 20 min hike through a valley of volcanic rock (it's a flat hike, but it's long because of the uneven ground) I've made the walk in flip flops, but there were more than a few times that I have lost footing, so real shoes or something thicker than flip... less [-]

From the post below, if you want a real ethnic experience, hit Chinatown around lunchtime and check out all the produce, fish, meat, noodle vendors etc. Maunakea Marketplace is set inside the block bounded by Maunakea St, Hotel, River, and Pauahi, and has one section for vendors and one section is a food court, full of mainly Filipino and Vietnamese places, but maybe a couple of Thai, Japanese, and one faux Singapore Chinese place. Probably the most inexpensive of all the places mentioned...certainly cheaper than comparable things in Waikiki, Ala Moana, or the food trucks, although the quality may not match Shirokiya...

If you are in town Tuesday at lunchtime you should head to the Food Truck roundup near the Medical School, just off Ala Moana Blvd between downtown and Ala Moana shopping center. there are 5-7 trucks offering a variety of things...Camille on Wheels is highly regarded...their chicken pot pies always sell out early. From there you can walk a block to the oceanfront park to enjoy your lunch and a great view, and the kids should enjoy that area. I think there is a playground on part of it, but would need confirmation on that....but the Children's Discovery Center is also nearby.
For a Waikiki dinner (or lunch) there is the Diamond Head Market and Grill, corner of Monserrat at Campbell, with very good take out...walking distance to Kapi'olani Park and the quiet part of Waikiki Beach.
It might also be fun to take the crowd to the new Japanese food court upstairs at Shirokiya near Macy's in Ala Moana Shopping Center...doubt there is anything like that anywhere on the Mainland....again you could take your selections across to Ala Moana Beach park to enjoy the sunset...one of the best sunset views on this side of the island is from the walkway around Magic Island there.
