Good analysis on an LSU site last year:
LSU Defensive Coordinator Candidate: Bob Shoop - And The Valley Shook

"Our identity is we're an in‑your‑face style of defense that's going to be fun to watch and even more fun for our players to play, I promise you that,'' Shoop said. "It is based on two premises, relentless pursuit and never‑ending pressure. First thing I say to the guys all the time is everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the face. We throw the first punch and keep on punching.

"We make sure it's not the last punch and keep on punching. That's who we are."

Mr. Fix-it: A look at Penn State defensive coordinator Bob Shoop's success at Vanderbilt | PennLive.com

Shoop, for starters, is a fountain of information. Sometimes when you talk to a coach or player, he might take two or three minutes answering a question, but when you go back and listen to it, you realize he didn't really say anything. Former Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield was the king of that.

Shoop is just the opposite. Every member of the PSU beat loves chatting with him because he gives detailed, thoughtful insight on just about every question.

A typical Thursday conference call consists of about 15 reporters asking one question each, then they go through the roll again for a second time, and the whole call takes about 30 minutes. Last week, we only made it through the roll call once because Shoop's answers took so much time that all 30 minutes were used up.

It's not just that he gives long answers. The passion in his voice, the varied stories he tells, the information he recalls about current and former players, the Xs and Os, all of it smacks of a guy who lives and breathes football, loves coaching it, loves talking about it and fully understands the tangibles and intangibles it takes to be successful.

PSU fans should enjoy Shoop-Pry defensive coaching tandem while you can - AltoonaMirror.com

Shoop is Penn State's fourth defensive coordinator in four years, with a style quite different from his predecessors. Players say Shoop runs the most meticulous staff for which they have played. From practices to pre-game walk-through, Shoop pores over details other coaches haven't.

"He demands perfection, and if you don't get it right, he makes you do it over again," linebacker Mike Hull said. "In walk-throughs, the communication better be perfect or you do it again. They're very meticulous and detailed in what they do, and that's why we've had so much success."

"His gameplans are phenomenal," linebacker Nyeem Wartman said. "He’s like a mad scientist the way he figures stuff out."

...Having a coordinator that gets the defense ready so thoroughly has contributed to the Lions’ performance. Going into games knowing what the opposing offense will do puts Penn State a step ahead, resulting in three-and-outs, turnovers and most importantly, wins.

The hours of studying Shoop spends in the film room and the office carries over as poise once Saturday rolls around. That self-assurance is witnessed by his players throughout the week, helping them feel more equipped for their opponent. And a prepared defense means a nightmare for offenses.

The most important thing for me out of this hire is that it directly addresses problems we've had moving on to the next--elite, FINAL level. The difference between Jancek and Shoop if this hire had happened last year?

We beat Oklahoma. We beat Florida. We beat Arkansas. We...probably still don't beat Bama but we get the rematch and probably don't beat them again. We are 11-2 after the SECG and go to the Sugar Bowl and stomp some serious ass. With this hire, and depending on the imminent assistant shuffle, Tennessee players get that final bit of development they need to become one of the top 1 or 2 defenses in the NCAA.

Paired with our offense? Our special teams? The building depth on our roster? Our fan base and the passion of our players?

This may just have been the final brick.

Plus I love his quote about delivering punches I'm not too familiar with his defense but what I saw at Vandy, but if his motto is this I love him already.. I hate the sit back defenses I want blitz blitz pursue type aggressive defense and I believe we got our man

We'll be watching several recruit commits and maybe a flip or two over the next few weeks because of this hire. Granted, Bainzilla is ours which means EVERYTHING but I'll be shocked if we don't lock in our top defensive targets before NSD.

And then, it's on to spring ball.

And I may come down for the orange and white game this year. Would be the first one for me since '97

He says "Never-ending pressure"..... if he says that in a presser here he should immediately be asked "What about on 4th and 14 when their QB is hurt and a stop wins the game?"

Quote from Penn State defensive tackle after playing one year under Shoop:
"Coach Shoop is a genius. He's a genius. A football genius," said Johnson. "It feels good to be playing under a genius. It feels good, and that's why we're so good. It's also the players, we execute whatever he says, whatever he calls and stuff like that, but Coach Shoop is definitely the best defensive coordinator. Absolutely, 100 percent."

Shoops defense revolves out of the secondary pass coverage and the press. Only way to play as aggressive as he likes with line and backers.

This means the DB coach and LB coach may be the most critical position coaches on his staff.

To be honest, Martinez is a good recruiter, but the DB squad took a step back with Fair leaving. Even Sutton had more lapses this year, especially with his hip work.

Thigpen seems to be solid position coach, but if his personality is hindering recruiting, it could make him vulnerable to being replaced.

Strippling is rock solid. Don't see him going anywhere.
