What Non-SEC foe would you like UT to play

I just recently got my copy of the Football Time in Tennessee, and I was observing the non-conference schedule for other SEC teams. A lot of the teams have a non-conference opponent that they play yearly. Granted they are mostly instate rivals; however, and just for fun, what non-conference school would you think to be a cool out of state non-conference rival? I noticed that Vanderbilt has been trying to make one out of Wake Forrest lately. Just a thought for conversation reasons only.

I always thought UCLA was kind of our out of conference opponent. I never really liked it too much, but they have been a big part of history over the last 20 or so years.

Well we have Oregon again in 2013, Oklahoma scheduled for 2014-15, Nebraska is on the docket for 2016 and 2017 and Ohio State in 2018-2019 (Tennessee Volunteers Football Future Schedules). So you are going to have to wait quite some time to take on another traditional power. Having said that, the following options come to mind:

(1) We are 1-2 against Texas (all Cotton Bowl appearances) but have never played them in the regular season.

(2) We have only played Michigan once, a rousing 45-17 victory in the 2002 Citrus Bowl, so a home-and-home series with them would be appealing.

(3) In 4 games with USC, the last of which was 1981, we have yet to beat them, so that would be another interesting matchup, especially with all of the bad blood Kiffin left in his wake.

(4) We are 4-4 against Notre Dame and seem to take them on every 10-12 years.

(5) We have lost the last three bowl games against Penn State but haven’t played them in the regular season since beating them in 1971 and 1972.

(6) We have only played Florida State twice, the last of which was, of course, the national championship victory in 1999. The only regular season appearance was way back in 1958, so that would be a viable option.

(7) Right now, Boise State and TCU would be intriguing matchups. We have never played Boise State and played TCU twice, winning in 1973 and 1976.

That's a reall good perspective; however, I personally have no real interest in a regular series with boise or tcu. I'm one of the nay sayers that doesn't feel like they have arrived yet. I would probably change my tune if they joined one of the prominant BCS conferences. Getting the team fired up for 2 games a year just doesn't make them a powerhouse yet. I wouldn't mind watching UT play them, I just don't wouldn't want it to be a reaccuring schedule squirmish.

I know that North Carolina has logical geographical appeal, but we have played them a lot, although not frequently in recent years. The Music City Bowl was the first matchup with the Tar Heels since 1961 but we are 20-8-1 all-time against them. Clemson would be a viable regional opponent, one that we haven’t played in the regular season since 1976. Renewal of the Georgia Tech rivalry is certainly viable since we haven’t played them since 1987, but we are 24-17-2 overall against the Yellow Jackets, so there definitely is no novelty there. We are 3-2 all-time vs. Virginia Tech but haven’t played them in the regular season since 1937, so they would be a long over due regional opponent.
