There are coaches out there that have specialties and a main focus area:

Saban= Defense/DBs
Spurrier= Offense/QBs
Muschamp= Defense
Stoops= Defense
Mullen= Offense
Petrino=Offense

These are just a few examples, but it seems that all good coaches have a offensive or defensive mind and an area of expertise.

I was thinking about this last night and it led me to ask what kind of coach is Butch Jones?

I believe he is regarded as an offensive mind. However, I read an article that shows his teams play great defense at UTSports. I recommend it as it is a good read.

OVERALL EFFICIENCY
1. Nick Saban 10.01
2. Les Miles 9.33
3. Brian Kelly 3.83
4. Butch Jones 3.30
5. Bill Snyder 3.12
6. David Shaw 3.04
7. Chip Kelly 2.68
8. Bret Bielema 2.35
9. Will Muschamp 2.23
10. Chris Petersen 2.20
DEFENSIVE EFFICIENCY
1. Nick Saban 22.37
2. Brian Kelly 22.22
3. Les Miles 20.76
4. Butch Jones 19.92
5. Chris Petersen 18.84
6. Steve Addazio 18.44
7. Will Muschamp 18.24
8. David Shaw 17.87
9. Dan Mullen 17.64
10. Brady Hoke 17.53

I know I am turning on Butch fast, and God forgive me, but the UF game really bothers me.

I was proud of the GA game and didn't think we should win but FL is horrible this year.

So....with that said....

What is the one difference among BJ compared to others?

He got this metric based on playing in a crap division.

The others, besides Kelly, didn't.

And Kelly has beaten top teams.

The kind that is 0-2 against the two worst Florida teams in a generation. The kind that was upset at home by an underdog, dumpster fire program being coached by Will Muschamp. The kind that lost to Florida on the same field in the same season in which Georgia Southern beat that Florida team. The kind of coach that lost to a Florida team in Knoxville after that Florida team needed 3 OT to beat Kentucky in Gainesville.

To me, he is the type of coach that convinces eveyone to play for a common goal.He is neither defense or offense coach. I would say he is a great salesman that can make people believe in a dream and has the ability to bring people on board. We are all hurt over this loss but we played 22 freshman and 2 of them was only 17 years old. People have a tendency to hype themselves up and then when our team performs the way we was predicted then all hell breaks loose and they turn on a good coach.

That's before he joined the SEC. I imagine he would be way WAY down now

I understand. I just thought it interesting that his teams were much more efficient on defense than on O considering he's an offensive minded coach. Both were before he joined the SEC.

We have so many weaknesses on either side of the line that I think it is premature to predict what his "specialty" might be. After witnessing the poor defensive play 2 years ago, he has made remarkable progress bringing the defense along though. Offense requires the development if skill position players, as opposed to instinctual players on defense, and this requires considerably more time.

So if coaching doesn't work out, he'll make one heck of a VFL Coordinator.

Butch has been an offensive coordinator, so he's an offensive coach.

The kind of coach that can't win in the worst SEC East in history, while the freaking Mississippi schools are unbeaten in the toughest division in college football history.

No, if many here get their way and VN helps oust Jones, he will go where he will win a NC for someone else.

Butch is a team manager and recruiter just like Phil Fulmer was. He will be as good of a coach as his offensive and defensive coordinators will allow him to be.

He's a damn good one if people will just be patient. He's inherited a program that for the last 6-7 years hasn't had a winning mindset. You have to change the culture before you see results. Implanting that tough minded approach to guys who have been under the poison of Dooley need time to learn how not to be a loser cognitively. Our o-line is filled with guys who their freshman and sophomore years weren't even working out regularly because Dooley had no idea WTF he was doing. Give it time. I know that's hard because some many of you gave ample time to Kiffin and Dooley, but Butch is the man for the job.

I love Coach Jones. He needs more time. It really sucks we could not win last night but if he gets his OLine guys and QB in, we may do fine. The ones he has recruited so far that are playing are doing well for young guys.

Plus the players love Jones just like they did Fulmer. They could not stand Dooley.

I hope Big Charles Mosley can start at Oline next year and have a huge impact. He has the size we need up front. A couple big guys like him can make a huge difference if they know what to do.

We need OTs in the worst way and the only one we currently have coming in is a lightly recruited 3 star who is not playing for his high school team this year due to a torn Achilles. He made a big mistake putting all his eggs in the Drew Richmond basket.

Yeah. Can Mosley play tackle next year? IDK.
