I am looking to get my 7 year old a personal gaming device. I was a "gamer" in college, but I've not kept up with it since.

What is the best handheld device in terms of usage, accessories, games, etc?

I've looked at the Nintendo DS and the PSP. There may be others that I haven't even looked at either. Thanks for any advice.

Nice try. You have a "buddy" with an internet porn problem too?

Gameboy Advance SP should still be being sold. Either way, the DS plays old GB Advance games.

I think the DS is the way to go for actual gaming... as an overall "handheld device" I give it to the PSP with the ability to play movies and be modded.

The DS is most appropriate for a 7 year old. It's also easy to "connect" with a friend (there with you) for multi-player games.

All hand held devices stay away from the Layla Kiffin thread.......

I'd definitely have to agree with the all the DS posts...theres nice colors to choose from, not orange, but you can always get a skin for it. There's a huge variety of games also. There's even plenty of girly games too.

DS. For a 7 year old, no question.

If you're handy with a computer you can grab what's called an R4 card. Present the kid with a list of games to play from a memory card. You know, your 'backups.'

Just don't let him play with it 24/7. Most of the little kids I see with DS's look like they never move off of their couch.

get one of the Brain Age games and be prepared to feel stupid next to your 7 year old.

Good info all, thanks. I was leaning to the DS and this has confirmed it. I wanted to go with the Wii but the wife vetoed it in favor of the handheld. He'll only get to play it in moderation and mainly on car trips.

BmfPV, how did you know about that "buddy"? Any advice?

Wasn't there a lawsuit about this? I'm pretty sure at a kid accepted a connection from some guy at an airport who then drew "inappropriate" things and sent them over to the kid.

I've never used a DS so I'm not sure how the connections are built and what they're capable of on a peer-to-peer basis.

DS without question. I sold tons of these to little gamers' parents when I worked at GameStop. You will have no problem at all finding appropriate games and tons of accessories.
