Just listening on the Sports Animal...Kenny is doing an interview and said the thing he loves the most about UT is the off the field perks, said that he wouldn't go into, the girl giving the interview asks him to explain...he goes on to say that he gets a lot of help with his homework.

Everyone knows that this goes on, but why advertise it on the radio?

Because he is a dumb 19 year old psuedo-professional athlete, hence the special academic treatment.

I can't argue too much with that...like I said, it happens everywhere, but why in the world would go on the radio and say it?

I know they teach these kids how to act around the media...guess someone else did that for him too.

Why hide it? Academic support is one of the big selling points to a lot of parents in the recruiting process. Parents aren't stupid. If there son has not excelled in the classroom in grade school, high school, etc., how else are they going to make it in college?

I understand where you are coming from and am not privy to the interview so I'll have to respect your take on how his "perks" are being portrayed.

Now if he says he is getting $$, cars, girls, then I see that CBP needs to monitor these interviews a little closer.

It's not just what he said but how he said it...you can tell he said it with a big smile on his face. Didn't sound like he was referring to how great the tutors are, more like how he doesn't do jack but play ball. Shame.

He probably meant to say the help from tutors, but it didn't come out right. But no doubt athletes get special help from other students, have known several D-1 football players who had girls write all their papers and do all their homework for them. It happens everywhere, even at smaller colleges.

I don't see the big deal. If you know anything about student athletes, you should know that get tons of academic help. From tutors, to study tables, academic advising, etc. It's all legal and is the reason why a lot of the athletes are able to stay academically eligible.

And the reason so many of these kids end up failing the real game...the real world. Most of these kids won't ever make a living playing ball, and they end up throwing away their opportunity for an education. Hopefully Kenny is smart enough to figure it out. Most don't.

overheard one day in front of gibbs... a student tour guide was leading a group of high school students around with their parents... he stopped beside art/architecture and said "That's Gibbs Hall.. it's the athletic dorm... well, technically it can only be 1/2 athletes, so 51% are tutors..." .... stunned silence.......

:eek:lol:

It's called the Thornton Center. Not exactly a secret.

It kind of makes me mad though... I needed a tutor for chemistry, and all the department provides is a massive list with tutors from over the years, some of whom haven't been in school in forever, and of the ones who are, you have no idea who is good and who isn't. Anyway, I doubt any athlete takes Chemistry, but I was on my way back from class and stopped into the Thornton Center to see if one of the tutors there could recommend someone they knew, or at least point me in the right direction. The girl in the front said that if I wasn't an athlete I had to leave. I mean, not even friendly! If her job falls through there, she'd be great working at parking services.

We're not a university, we're a minor league sports program. Oh well, it works out okay when the person interviewing you for a job is a sports fan and you can talk about ball games the whole time. :birgits_giggle:

He did not say anything out of line here as far as what is quoted. He could have also smiled and said special dorms, perky weight room, perky warm ups shoes and clothing, or a host of other things given to student athletes. I don't understand the thread.

It's the OP's tryout for the NYTimes. You know, tabloid sh*t stirring journalism at it's best.

Most of the best gladiators in this country need help to be able to read (and speak) their own language. When it's a multi-billion dollar activity...they get help.
