What if we beat Bama but are still mediocre 8-4?

I'd be tickled with 8 wins this year especially if bama is one of them. Given the losses to graduation and a new staff, I think 7 wins is more likely the ceiling. Just make a bowl game.....and please don't let it be in memphis.

Sorry but that assumption is nuts. 7 being he ceiling would be a true dismantlement of what has been built the past few years. With recruiting being how it has been I don't see how that would be a possibility.

7 being the ceiling would mean you could see 5-6 wins being very likely. So I'll say again there is no way. And if your over under is 7 wins do you feel like gambling, because I have no problem taking 8< and your money lol.

Going into last year I thought as long as we beat Florida and won 8/9 games I'd be happy. Then we lost to Vanderbilt.

Be careful what you wish for. ....

I think beating Bama but still losing the SEC East would be a terrible scenario in that it would buy Butch more time with allot of VolNation faithful and the UT administration yet further convince Butch's critics that he isn't the coach to get us over the hump.

I can't see us sneaking up on Bama under any circumstance because no one does. I think Saban would cut block his son to win a father-son flag football game.

However it's the off-season and I'm bored.

With all the uncertainties going into 2017 I could see us starting out 3-3 with losses to UF, G Tech, & UGA
(I don't think that will happen, but I could see it) & then whether it be from a QB improving or a QB change sparking us, our defense solidifying, or a multitude of other scenarios; finishing the year 5-1 for 8-4.

Would Butch have more security going into 2018 with an Alabama upset at 8-4 or would the (not without justifiable basis) frustration of having lost to inferior teams than some of the teams we beat firmly place Butch on the 2018 hot seat?

Finally I intentionally left the bowl game out of this scenario because I won't care if we're 8-4. I'm a former sunshine pumper, presently a hopeful cynic that ate his crow and washed it down with a jug of Vandy pi$s. I think even with an upset of Bama, at 8-4 Butch goes into 2018 with a get to Atlanta or pack a bag level of pressure.

8 wins is never mediocre. It may be below expectations but don't ever get so cocky that a 667 winning percentage is average because 500 is average.

If we go 8-4 and beat Bama it means we lost 4 games to inferior opponents.

If you have the talent to beat Bama and lose 4 other games on our schedule, you need to find a new coach who can do more than a Taxslayer Bowl appearance with said talent.

Or it means we played a perfect game and the bounces went our way in one game and they didn't in the others. If the most talented team always won then there would be no reason to watch the games.

8-4 is not what we're looking for regardless of who we beat. It would be a step backwards. It would be a good record for Vandy or Kentucky.

SEC has won the national title 8 of the last 11 years. What else needs to be said? The ACC or B10 may surpass the SEC soon, but it hasn't happened yet. SEC is still the best conference in CFB from top to bottom, everyone knows it - even the media guys - except they may spin a different web just to sell clicks.

You do realize the sec has more than 3 teams, which make up all those titles, the majority of those titles are from one team. One of the teams that won one, jas sucked nearly every year except that one. The conference has not been dominate as a whole.

Actually, we have been. Throughout the regular seasons and in the bowls, big teams and small, top to bottom, year after year. Not just championship games, all games involving two Power5 conferences. All you gotta do to see it is count wins. No other conference could touch us.

Until 2016. Last year, the SEC stunk up the joint. Top to bottom.

Here's hoping we reclaim the top of the hill in 2017 and beyond. When Tennessee starts winning championships, I want us to be Best of the Best, not Best of an also-ran conference.

I hope we're not a one and done. I'd like to see us build it and at least play in the NC every few years.

Be in the SECCG more than that.

The conferences ooc and bowl record has not been good at all over the past several years.

And if Tennessee wins a championship, i dont care if everyone else in the sec sucks, it simply wont matter. Not a single person on this board is going to say " welk this championship would have been alot better if the sec was better, but sinces its not, this championship sucks. Sure it sounds good to say i guess, but it doesnt matter at all.

Again, not true.

I don't keep regular season records older than the past year, but we have been dominant for many years. Here, I do keep the bowl records, which are very similar to the regular season most years.
  • 2015 - SEC goes 9-2 in bowls. No other P5 conference comes close. Regular season much the same way.
  • 2014 - SEC 7-5 in bowls. Doesn't sound great until you realize only one P5 conference (PAC) did better, at 6-3.
  • 2013 - SEC 7-3 in bowls, best of P5.
  • 2012 - SEC 6-3 in bowls. ditto.
  • and on it goes.
Regular season results generally mirrored the bowls well. SEC almost always in the lead, even down years we were still the 2nd best.

So yeah, the SEC has been very, very good over the years, top to bottom.

Just not in 2016.

I've been critical of Jones. But if he beats Bama and they're in contention for the NC... then that won't be a mediocre year even if he drops a games somewhere else.

However, I don't think this team finishes worse than 9-3 if they are good enough to beat Bama on the road in October BEFORE playing UK and Vandy.

PS- If he does beat Bama... write him a check and a long contract. THAT would be the kind of pivot point he needs.

I've got T-shirts one says "Beat Bama", another one says "Beat Florida".

This. Wouldn't much care what else happens.

Well, I guess the Vols ought to at least beat Vandy, too. But that's putting Vandy on par with Bama and the Gators. Weird how things work out sometimes.

Do you guys think a win over Bama this year would be better for him than Fulmer making the SECCG's befor the '05 & '08 seasons?

I remember Fulmer's last year when they called him Coacho Ocho for promising an eight win season.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

(Yeah, had to look that up in Wikipedia.)
