just a thought.....

with such depth issues and eb playing a hybrid lb position in most respects, i think it would be cool to have our defensive strong suit calling all the shots at the mike position.

I think he'd be ok playing there on a temporary basis but the coaching staff has all ready said it won't happen.

janzen jackson could easily rein in both safety slots and we aren't experiencing depth issues in secondary.

eb would be a beast.

In the 3-4 defense the linebackers are called Mike (middle) Sam (strong side) and Tim (weak side). I haven't a clue where the names came from.

If the LB's keep going down, we may not have a choice than to use a DB in that slot. Don't think I'd use EB though.

Haha, never heard the weak side backer called Tim. It's pretty simple really. Sam, just a name with an S for Strong Side. Mike has the M for middle, and Will has the W for Weak side. It's not super secret coach speak or anything.

Mike under Kiffin is the quarterback for the defense, plays the run and short safety in tampa 2. Of all the positions on defense this is the worst position to be short handed. I would move Gerald Williams or Chris Donald into the position and go to nickel package on passing downs. Lathers has been playing pretty good though at the position.
The main problem is Lathers' backup is a true freshman Nigel Thornton. Putting Williams or Donald in the middle would solidify run defense.

I might be the only one who thinks this but, with the way our MLB's are getting injured, I wouldn't want to see Berry as well. Just a jinxed position for us this year.
The third stringers (if they can handle the responsibility) should suffice. JJ and EB pick up the slack behind them.

It wouldn't be a bad move to do it I think. Maybe put Darren Myles in the other Safety spot...but then we would have three true freshmen in the secondary, with Rogan being the only upperclassman back there. Obviously the coaches don't think it's in our best interest to do it, and I trust them far more than I trust my own opinions haha.

Weak is Will and I don't think we need a 5'11" 190 pound middle linebacker... that's a little undersized even when you're talking about Eric Berry.

Who is the other true freshman? Do you mean our safeties would be true freshman, save Rogan? Art Evans isn't a true freshman...

Do you really want offensive lineman coming after Berry on every play? He is too small to play that position. Although he hits like a freight train, I don't think he would last at that position long (physically).

Besides, he's too valuable in pass defense.

I thought the "Tim position" was something that CUM came up with the first time he got Tebow alone in his coaches office

+1, no way EB could be really effective at the Mike. The reason that he can come up to the line and make good plays is because that Mike, Sam, or Will are eating up blocks from 6'6 300 lb linemen.

Berry is 205 and Lathers can't be more than 215. Berry, playing close to the line, came off blocks well enough and then eventually teams pretty much stopped running plays on his half of the field.
