I know we've probably talked about this game enough and it's time to move on, but I'm curious about this. While waiting for the second half last night, I mentioned that we'll be alright as long as we don't start the second half with a slump and low and behold....

It seems like in about 80% of our games this season, the Vols have looked terrible coming out of the locker room after halftime. What gives? I know Pearl isn't in there singing them lullabies.

Is Pearl's game plan that easy to adjust to or is it something else?

I don't know, but instead of being overjoyed and confident at halftime I was uneasy and concerned (although hopeful) about the final score after seeing so many comfortable leads lost during the year. I hate all that "history repeats itself" crap. But I do believe the Big Orange basketball fortunes are headed in the right direction under our beloved "painted Pearl"!!!

Same here. I was worried about the egg we laid against auburn. :cray: It all came to a sad ending.

With more experience next year, I'm hoping this is significantly less of a problem.

On the flip side, there was the game against Texas where the Vols were down by about 15 at halftime and came back to force OT and eventually get the win. Seems like it's more of a thing where they were only able to play one great half of basketball in a given game. Unfortunately, the great half was the first half the majority of the time like you said.

Strange... I brought this up last night in a forum and I got hammered for saying BP didn't do a good job at making halftime adjustments...

I think it's directly related to our personnel limitations. We can only play one style effectively. Therefore, the other coach has adjustments available to him that Bruce doesn't.

Any idea why we didn't try to challenge Oden after he got his fourth foul? It seemed like we just left him totally alone when he came back in the game.

Surley Bruce knew Ohio State was going to come out with adjustments... so why didn't he adjust to their adjustments? Also, was I the only one screaming at the tv "call a timeout!!" during that massive run?

I agree. It's not like we can switch gears and start pounding the ball inside.

Ehh I disagree. Not all of our games are highscoring because we mix up our tempos for different games. (Although we only saw one tempo during the tournament and Ohio State was the only team with enough depth to handle it)

Good point. We still don't have the offensive type big guy inside that we can go to, or pay pick and roll with, in the half court game. Wingate, even with his athlethic deficiencies, was becoming that guy at the end of last season.

Exactly. I would like to know what adjustments he was going to make. We have no real half court offense other than shooting the three. It's not like there was some magic tweak that was suddenly going to make us a good halfcourt defensive team. If you keep Tennessee out of the open court, you're probably going to beat them.

I don't think there was ever a point in the season where we consciously tried to mix up the tempo. We always wanted to play fast, it was just a matter of how hot or cold we were from the field and whether we had a chance to set up the press.

well we also have backdoor cuts thats why we run the flex offense. Unfortunately when we tried that in the second half we just turned it over every time.

We run a pretty slow offensive tempo. That flex offense takes a while. We just run fast tempo when we get hot and after we score so we can press.

Hand it to the Ohio State staff, they knew that our half court offense was funnelled thru Bradshaw and they cut off his passing lanes.

Name the good teams we beat playing a half court game.

Did we take a timeout to the locker room? If so, we should have called one after crossing midcourt and drawn up a play for Lofton. Everyone would have known we were going to him, but I'd rather see Lofton put up a shot over anybody than Ramar driving with Oden hanging around the basket.

Yeah, I know it's been discussed but Oden wasn't supposed to be hanging around the basket. Chism was supposed to set a screen at half court that would, ideally, keep Oden from getting back so quickly.
