What grade would you give Mike Hamilton as Athletic Director?

The revitalization of the basketball program is the only thing that stopped me from giving him an F.

I think that what he has done with getting BP and renovating all of the athletic facilities is the only thing that keep me from giving him a D or an F

C for now. Basketball helps him. Biggest mark against him was Fulmer's last contract extension.

Pearl was a great hire. He pumped life back into our basketball program at the very least.

Raleigh is a bad baseball coach. Period.

Some questionable decisions concerning Fulmer.

Kiffin was a good hire. Bold. It blew up in his face, though.

And Dooley... jury's still out.

B. He went against the power brokers on the Hill and booted Fulmer but of course the stupid contract extension off-set that. Pearl was a good hoops hire and he has breathed much needed enthusiasm and life in our hoops program. Kiffin was a good hire and it's not MH's fault that Kiffin cut out for his dream job. The 800,000 buyout of Kiffin's contract was light but considering the stupid money he gave to Fulmer, I could understand. Had he put in a higher buyout clause and had Kiffin flopped, that probably would've been the death-knell for Mike. The grade on Dooley is incomplete but he seems like a solid hire. Considering the tenuous coaching lurches which MH faced, especially during quickly closing windows of opportunity to hold together some decent recruitng classes, I feel as though MH has done well with the cards he was dealt. He does have, however, room for improvement.

Hammy boy is teetering on the precipice. Bruce has increased the visibility of the basketball program but some of his signees have crapped on his credibility. He's signed two football coaches in a row with losing records as head coaches which is questionable when one is talking about a program prestigious as the University of Tennessee. Hopefully Derek will rescue Hammy from falling into the abyss.

agree with all you wrote. To clarify, the contract extension and massive buyout arecmy main problems with fulmer. But from that i would give him a B. In the two biggest sports- bball, incredibly good hire. Fball-kiffin good hire, incredibly bad luck, i don't hold that against him. And cdd, I believe will be good. Even with raleigh, still above average.

Good post, I agree. Just a note, the buyouts are not the same in both directions. X's buy out was alot more if we had fired him and had to pay. I'm not saying that to disagree with you, just to clarify.

I'd give him a passing grade with the basketball program, epic fail with the football program.

B- I think the CLK hire was good it just blew up in all of our faces. Who would of thought USC would have come calling after 1 year. After the Pearl hire I have faith in his ability to evaluate coaches. Like its been said, the Jury is still out on Dooley, but as of now he has done everything right. While the contract extension for Fulmer was stupid, I still have faith in Hammy.

He failed miserably at selling the UT football brand to the big coaching names; I don't think he has the charisma to sway the people he's working with

He has done a great job with the facilities upgrades, and made a great hire in Bruce. He also had a home run hire in Kiffin (I believe) if we just didn't get so unlucky that USC job came open so soon. But if Dooley keeps on the track of Kiffin then we will be fine there.

But I am opposed to his pricing philosphy when it comes to the stadium. He is turning our home field into a social gathering of Knoxville's elite. I am all for being successful and networking, but just not in Neyland on a Saturday in a fall. I look at tapes of games in the early 90's and the fans look like its full of South Knoxville's finest getting rowdy and making some noise! I want that back!

I disagree. The reason he had trouble selling this program to big name coaches is the difficult position we were in. It was a couple of weeks before NSD. We had just lost a coach, Knoxville was in an uproar, and Tennessee football seemed to be hitting an all time low. He hired a guy who seems to love and and respect the tradition of UT football, and that guy in my opinion could not have been more successful in the few weeks he had to maintain our signing class. When X left I thought we'd struggle to stay in the top 25 recruiting.

No, the program isn't in the state it was in in the 90's or even up until the mid-00's and it makes the sale tougher. But UT is still a prestigious football program with resources and willingness to spend money to get the best. I'm not knocking CDD; I think he will do a great hire. I just hate seeing story after story talking about some coach who turned us down; it makes us look like a bunch of 2nd rate jackasses.

The problem was not neccessarily big name coaches turning us down, it was the media. We really do not know who all was offered, if you go by the local media we offered everyone this position. I think the local media sources made us look like we couldn't find a hire, when in truth they do not really know who got offered.

He let the football program go way down. Hopefully, it comes back soon. He got lucky with the Pearl hire.
