What ever happened to the V-O-L-S Sign

right, and don't forget how the restroom renovations hurt the VOLS, too

They had to go and tinker with the one between W & X1! That place was huge. Who cares if the pipes leaked and it smelled like 60 year old urine. You could get in and get out.

And since Kesling took over

Interesting as well. So UT's football futility all boils down to:

1. The original V-O-L-S sign being replace and ultimately removed.

2. The white goal post pads being replaced with the wrong-colored orange ones.

3. Remodeling the pi$$ers.

4. John Ward retiring and being replaced by Kesling.

If I'm the new AD the course of action seems pretty simple to me.

Uhhh what? Which letters were bigger out of the four? Asking for a friend

There were actually two sets of the V O L S letters. The first were orange with white background with orange bars above and below. Those were on the stadium long before the upper deck was installed in the south end of the field.

When the upper deck was done, they installed white letters with an orange background. They were up there until the jumbo-tron was installed. I would think that second set had slightly larger letters...maybe.

I know they were removed from the stadium but whatever happened to them? Are they in storage somewhere or part of a private collection.

Also anyone have a high res picture of them...id like to do a project for the man cave.

coffeevol, check this story. Might answer your question.

The two sets I referred to above were larger, and God only knows what happened to them. But they had to be quite a bit larger than those in this story.

I saw the "S" for sale at a flea market in Harriman several years ago.

Another oddball question, when did they stop putting the Gulden's mustard packet in the Smokey Dogs? Depending on when that stopped we may add that to the list of reasons for UT's demise.

It makes the Birthday cake tricky. I'm glad they figured the cake problem out(smash cake).

By the time she is 13, I bet she figures it out.

By the time she is 13, I bet she has more figured out than you want her to.

My buddy and I had our original 4 season tickets 6 rows from top under the "O". We called it the O-Zone.

Sitting up there with our young sons during the flood game with Florida. Water coming down steps like a waterfall. Shuler and company whipped dey azz.

Saw many a drunk take a tumble down those steep stairs.

Mine is about to turn 15. Every male who approaches her is told two things: 1) you hurt her, I hurt you and 2) I don't mind going back to prison.

Saw a shirt once that said "#1 thing to remember when dating my daughter: Anything you do to her, I'll do to you"

talk about scary.... and gross

There were three (at least). Here's the orange-on-white with bars you mentioned:

Then the white-on-orange after the south upper deck was built:

Those stayed throughout the rest of the upper deck additions (and that's the way I remember it from my student years... minus the north upper deck):

(these may be hard to see, especially on mobile)

When the big scoreboard was installed, they were replaced by the orange-on-white letters, which were actually separate north- and south-facing panels:

Those letters stayed until 2009 when the new jumbotron was added and the V O L S letters went away for good. All 8 of the last panels were auctioned off for charity in 2010 with a set of 4 going to Calhouns and the other four sold separately.

So.... whatever happened to the old orange-on-white with bars and the white-on-orange?

That 1st "Jumbro" tron was a joke. I remember the 1st time I saw it, Memphis game 1999, and I couldn't see the screen. It was like having a 21" TV in today's world.

Fixed.

And I thought you were a true fan.

Yes, forgot about the 2001 SEC CG. Sad moment. But 2,3, & 5 on your list happened after 1998.

Not sure when the pi$$ers were remodeled and I'm not sure when the Gulden's mustard pack was eliminated. And at some point it was established that you couldn't smoke on the S. Endzone ramps.

Yeah, I never realized they had those letters on the jumbo-tron until I found that article. Last time I was in Neyland, there was no jumbo-tron. My ass just isn't flexible enough for those seats anymore.
