Look, I am a UT fan to the core, therefore I am a Dooley fan to the core (until we start going 5-7 a couple times, then my fandome to UT overcomes my fandome to the coach). Anyway, I am puzzled by this quote by Dooley in the Knox News Sent.

"That process got rolling with a team meeting Monday in which Dooley told the team "he's not about rebuilding" according to a Twitter update from defensive end Willie Bohannon."

He's not about rebuilding? What does this mean? What is he thinking? He didn't inherit a bunch of world-beaters. He inherited some talent, a brutal schedule, and a fragile fanbase.

The only positive way I can take this statement, is that he meant something like, I'm not about rebuilding, I'm about skipping rebuilding and just winning. I just don't see that happening though. I just don't know. Somebody expain this to me.

It means he respects the seniors to be on this team and what they've been through with past coaches and there is no since desparaging their efforts with talk of rebuilding. Plus it's a cop out. We put on the dam orange uniform and play to win.

I believe this is close, but add that he doesn't plan on using that as an excuse. If we play hard enough, smart enough, and disciplined enough we can play with and beat anyone on our schedule. In essence I think he means:

Classy of them not finishing off the tweet by Willie Bohannon...Full tweet was

"the meeting went very well he's not about rebuilding he wants 2 win now and that's what we want 2 hear"

I feel like the east is wide open this year, with us or SC east having as good a shot as Florida, better shot than UGA, and then there's Vandy and UK in the cellar (just my opinion about the cellar). With that said, I think we can compete for the East, make a bowl, pretty much equal last years success.

From what some of you are saying, especially about the cop out and not dis'ing the senior class this year, it makes a little more sense.

Thanks.

This.
Clears up everything. Suddenly makes sense.
You are the man!
Thanks.

Message to the players that the mindset on the team should be about winning, not using rebuilding as a mental crutch. Up the expectations in other words.

To be honest, Georgia may be better than florida for 10'. Sounds insane but they have still have to gel, with a new QB and the loss of defensive talent. All these freshman they've aquired haven't done squawt yet. We'll see. But it's 7:30 and I've had a few.

This quote from Willie is the essence of what Dooley was trying to accomplish with that statement. As a coach saying exactly what he had/needed to. As a former player, and young coach I have learned it is absolutely pivotal to show your team that you have absolute confidence in them no matter if they are commin' off a 13-0 season, or have been 5-5 for 20 years in a row. Dooley may know in his head it will be a tough test for the next couple years, but the seniors and juniors, all the players for that matter are not drinking that kool-aid, they want to win now and that was a very subtle, but effective statement that will resonate throughout the team and staff.

I like that mindset. Granted, we expect a couple of lean years, but it's nice to see that we have a coach who won't allow his players to make excuses. I think that it's a welcome change to hear a coach say that he expects his players to not only compete, but win and not just "work like heck". Let's just keep our fingers crossed that Dooley can make Vol fans as proud of the on-field product as many of us, including myself, are becoming of his efforts off-the-field.

this is exactly what i'm thinking....Dooley is not about making excuses. I like that about him....he shows maturity and intelligence. All the more reason to like our new coach :hi:

My take is that DD is a man with a pronounced degree of moral clarity, which will produce an interaction with the team that will lift up rather than beat down; the lawyer in him will hopefully equip him to discern which chains to pull and how hard. I'm in high hopes that he can actually coach too.

I think it's too early to say if CDD has the integrity that we all want him to have. I think many assume Hamilton would naturally hire someone who would given what happened with Kiffin; I also think the new guy will always want to distance+distinguish himself from the old guy (much like Kiffin did v. Fulmer) and in this case reiterate how the program will be run with dignity. I'm not saying he doesn't have integrity, I'm just saying it's too early to really know. He is a lawyer, by the way.:)

Meaning we don't have to rebuild b/c we're good enough as it is right now we're not a bottom dweller team we're the University of Tennessee and with a little coaching from these coaches we'll be ready to go come fall!!

This is EXACTLY what it means. Dooley is not going to use the excuse "rebuilding" when he gets a loss. Tennessee has alot of talent and he expects to win.

You folks are delusional if you think UT is going to compete for the East or even finish with a winning record in 2010.

Is....that....Ashley Tisdale??

Care to enlighten us as to why we won't even finish .500?

The depth chart and the lack of talent on it along with the schedule and the plethora of teams on it with more talent than UT.

Less than 50 scholarship players are returning and the 4 new starting OL couldn't beat out 2 walk-ons a year ago. The program is slowly being pulled out of the ditch not competing for championships or with championship programs.
