What does Lane Kiffin have to do with our game against West Virginia?

Interesting side note about the upcoming W Va game:

Remember the 13-year-old quarterback prodigy who was offered a scholarship to USC by Lane Kiffin? Kid named David Sills. Made national news as a sign of excess: a "recruiting gone overboard" kind of story.

Well, Sills is now a wide receiver for the Mountaineers. In fact, he's one of their top receivers. Reportedly led the nation--not just W Va or the B12, but all of Division I football--in touchdown receptions in 2017. And he's back for his senior year in 2018. He'll be lining up against our defensive secondary.

Here's a Youtube clip on the strange path Sills took from 13-year-old QB star to college senior WR. Interesting, though not nearly as unique as the video creator plays up. I mean, it involves mainly injuries (not uncommon in sport), evolution from pond to lake to ocean (you start out as one of the really big fish, end up as just another talented guy), and a HS QB turning into a position specialist in College (think Jauan Jennings). The elements aren't that unusual. Even the scheming dad hyperactively guiding the kid's path to success is no longer a shock (Lavar Ball). It's really only the Kiffin scholarship offer at the age of 13 that was really eye-popping, and even that has been trumped over the years, like the more-recent LSU offer to an 11-year-old.

So not as unusual as you might initially think. But still, interesting human interest angle to what will be our first game of the 2018 season.

Go Vols!

West Virginia's WR's as a group are arguably the best in the country. And with a QB that can get the ball to them, this is going to be a long day for our secondary. Our only hope is to slow the game down and not give them many offensive possessions. Can't wait for Kiffin to go all D4H and brag about how right he was.

Defense will have to be solid vs WVA or we will get boat raced. I think Pruitt will have us ready.

Does Kiffin's agent pay you guys to keep talking about him?

Heh. You clearly don't know me, Hacksaw. I am hardly complimentary of Lane Kiffin.

But this is, however tenuous, one point of connection between the Mountaineers and the Volunteers. And you can bet money the media--ESPN, CBS, whoever--will include this among the storylines leading up to the game.

*shrug* Just the way it is.

I'm sure at some point Kiffin guided the kid to be a WR at WVA since we had them on our future schedule. This click bait is worse than Yahoo.

Sorry, just so tired of seeing his name. Volnation is practically the guy's fan club homepage. It's sickening.

Keep Grier on his ass and it won't make a difference.

Paul Bain can never recover a fumble. The football is too scared of him.

Well, no matter what CBS and ESPN think, Lane Kiffin still has Jack 5h1t to do with it. You need to find the Sill guy's email address, and send him an immediate apology before he smacks you so hard it hurts your Mama.

Based on what?

It's P5 football. If you don't have a solid defense, you can't count on winning many games. It doesn't matter how you get there, either by talent level or thru preparation, to win with any consistency defense can't be predictable. If CJP can predict right 75% of the time we might be fine. I'm not a big fan of running base defense. I think a defense should be running plays(stunts creative coverages). If we do what they expect us too there will be some long Saturdays this fall. I expect CJP to use creative game plans incorporating dynamic play calls at critical times of the game. When the game is on the line I expect better play rather than less than stellar performances.

These past 2 years were riddled with mistakes and injuries. If we can reduce each by 25%, that would still be a large #. There is a ton of low hanging fruit when it comes to areas to improve. What was our strength last year? Desire to win. There were so many players that were giving all last year. From beginning to end. There were too many that did not.

He couldn't smack me, Native. I may be old, but I'm slow. :)

Per reports this spring he is spending a lot of time with the DBs. I see that as a very good thing, seeing as how poorly we've had play back there for some time.

Lol. WV has never seen an sec defense. That game won't be close.
