Interesting side note about the upcoming W Va game:
Remember the 13-year-old quarterback prodigy who was offered a scholarship to USC by Lane Kiffin? Kid named David Sills. Made national news as a sign of excess: a "recruiting gone overboard" kind of story.
Well, Sills is now a wide receiver for the Mountaineers. In fact, he's one of their top receivers. Reportedly led the nation--not just W Va or the B12, but all of Division I football--in touchdown receptions in 2017. And he's back for his senior year in 2018. He'll be lining up against our defensive secondary.
Here's a Youtube clip on the strange path Sills took from 13-year-old QB star to college senior WR. Interesting, though not nearly as unique as the video creator plays up. I mean, it involves mainly injuries (not uncommon in sport), evolution from pond to lake to ocean (you start out as one of the really big fish, end up as just another talented guy), and a HS QB turning into a position specialist in College (think Jauan Jennings). The elements aren't that unusual. Even the scheming dad hyperactively guiding the kid's path to success is no longer a shock (Lavar Ball). It's really only the Kiffin scholarship offer at the age of 13 that was really eye-popping, and even that has been trumped over the years, like the more-recent LSU offer to an 11-year-old.
So not as unusual as you might initially think. But still, interesting human interest angle to what will be our first game of the 2018 season.
Go Vols!
