What could have been

Well, if Hurd had remained here, Kamara would not have gotten proper amount of carries.
Kelly would have started only one season here.
Too many stories about Hurds time at UT for us to determine what happened
My best guess is that Butch promised to hand him the keys to the backfield. No questions asked. When he had to split tike with Kamara, it hurt his ego and things went south from that point
Just my guess
From what I have read Hurd wanted to transition to a receiver. If that is true then Hurd would not have complained about sharing the ball with Kamara.

No discredit to either, but I think it also, not only, has to do with the conferences each of them transferred to. Big 12 was definitely down this last year AND Hurd was playing along side Mims. Always makes it tougher to lock a guy down if you are having to worry about another guy opposite of your target. Make no mistake though, Hurd was a tough mofo. He didn’t care about numbers. He always said that. He left to further his career and probably just get away from Butch. Preston simply left because he knew Dormady didn’t have the legs to dance behind our OL like Dobbs did, which meant it would only get worse for him. He also moved to a weaker conference which allowed him to play lights out.

Williams didn’t make it halfway through Dobbs final year. He didn’t save any eligibility by bailing at that point. Had nothing to do with Dormady.

Situation hurt Kamara because he lost status in NFL draft
Situation helped Kamara because he preserves his body while at UT with limited carries

Could it have hurt his draft number? Sure.

But to say he would have played as well elsewhere as he has on the Saints is lunacy.... Kamara landed in the best spot possible.

Pretty sure he wouldn't have near the stats he has had on Saints on any other team outside of the Pats maybe....

Everyone should learn from mistakes but I prefer to live my life in the present and plan for the future.

The thing that puzzles me about Hurd and Kamara is why on earth he didn't have them both in the game at the same time. Dobbs, Hurd, Kamara would of been the stuff of nightmares. Butch was just not a good coach. Another blue light Kmart special hire is all.

We will not have that problem with Pruitt. Butch Jones was a lot of the problem. We had Kamara and Butch didn't even know how to use him.

We had solid evidence this sort of thing was in Jones' background had we understood it was Butch who had JJ Watt as a TE in college when he actually became one the best pass ruhers of his day on defense in the NFL.

Look at what could have been.
We could have hired Charlie Strong or Willie Taggart or Butch Davis
Strong bombed at Texas. Taggart is doing bad at FSU. Davis got UNC in trouble with NCAA because his players were living in local hotels for free

We dodged some serious bullets by not hiring any of them
Look at what could have been

Can you imagine a power I backfield with Hurd and Kamara? Butch could have ridden that tandem to an SEC championship game.
Nope. The O-line was not good enough to pull that off against UGA, LSU and Bama. Hell, Miss St would've stuffed us, stone freakin' cold. You have to have a respectable passing game. For example, LSU.

And Vic Wharton had a pretty good finish at Cal. People wonder why Tennessee had top 10 classes but can't beat vandy or mizzou; they weren't top 25 after the attrition.
