What CJH Won't Say

If you want a championship caliber team you have to spend championship money on elite athletes. This game is no longer about school colors, now its the color of money. Spend like Ohio State and you get Ohio State results.
Good plan except you also need Ohio State money

Pretty sure Vandy doesn't spend like Ohio State and they still dominated TN in Neyland with less talent.
We definitely need to improve our overall talent, but there are some coaching issues going on too.
Correct. Money gets them here, but even the most talented athletes still need proper coaching and guidance.

100% facts
Well if that is the answer then start charging 1000 bucks for a single nose bleed seat 20 dollars for a coke 50 dollars for a hotdog 200 dollars for a hat and wow think of the possibilities 😛 question is outside of corporate donors will regular fans be willing to go in debt to buy a championship! Hell I don’t go to games anymore because I just don’t like big crowds and obnoxious idiots anymore!!

Vandy took in 20 players from the portal. I'm sure they paid for them, and they made a huge upgrade.

I wonder if the Football team is holding back some of its money for stadium renovations. Ticket sales were far more expensive this year, we lost our 2.4 mil QB, we let Jakobe Thomas enter the transfer portal....so where did the saved money go?

Uh hate to break it to you but without an elite coaching staff, you aren’t getting OSU results.

Let's get a little bit bigger sample size out of Vandy before we start using them as any kind of example. What are they, something like 1-6 (or is it 1-7?) against us since 2018. They had a good year--that ought to do them for about another decade.

It's a cumulative equation for OSU. We have many of same metrics as OSU. Maybe they spend more, but we spend plenty. It's also about stacking top 5 classes to be a year over year top ranked team, and we aren't there. It is also about coaching...or lack thereof. You can't convince me that all of our defense play was just injuries...we out talented Vandy on D, but you wouldn't have known it on Saturday. I've got a feeling that this year portal will be much more aggressive than last year, when JH under estimated how we'd fill out our losses on D.

They’re not going to the playoffs with that roster but they can set a school record for wins because they have a bunch of old men who probably won’t play pro ball but can play mistake-free ball.

It’s extremely unlikely that they will be able to pull off any consecutive years like this past year, but they can build up to that kind of performance over the course of 4 years and have success with a senior-heavy roster. They do have to put up with the 2-win seasons, though.

It takes both - great players and coaches. Sounds easy, but money doesn't grow on trees. Should we do better than this year - absolutely. What happens this off season will tell us a lot about Heup's ability to take a step up.

Vandy - they caught lightning in a bottle with their qb and offensive coach that came with him. They also had a junior/senior team with a lot of experience. That being said, they apparently do a good job teaching scheme, fundamentals and execution.

They will always be 'vandie'. That's all, folks. 😛

I believe this can be summed up as there is a "big difference" there

We get a 5* star Mike Matthews-who has issues catching the ball-a receivers primary job. We get high 4* Boo. Enough said.

Tosu gets 5* Jeremiah Smith.

Saying we spend $15 million or whatever on football NIL-great. But where is that money going?

Seems to me, we have quite a considerable number of players whose NIL requirements exceed their abilities

Have we had a top flight prospect who has actually worked out since Eric Berry? That's been almost 20 years ago man.

All of our "big gets" turn out to be basically busts-JG, Nico, Hurd, Boo etc etc etc. This is not limited to one coaching staff.

Our"big stars" usually come out of nowhere-low 3* Dobbs, Hyatt, and Hooker who showed up at our door with a suitcase.

Talent evaluation has been a problem around here for a long time. Occasionally, like a blind squirrel we find a nut though.

A school like OSU will simply always have a bigger base. They're larger and have more people to pull from
Ohio State is also one of the few schools outside of the SEC with an absolutely rabid (and obnoxious) football fanbase that will squeeze itself for money until they get results.

They're richer and just as crazy about winning as us. In this era, that's a very hard combination to beat.

It's the same thing that makes TX and aTm so dangerous in the SEC. They have far more money than us and are willing to keep spending it year after year until it works for them.

Lot of denial on here that Vandy will revert to the Vandy of old simply "because they're Vandy." Last I checked, Clark Lea is a heck of a coach and Diego Pavia, as talented as he is, didn't play a single down on a defense that held our vaunted offense to 24 points. Vanderbilt will be a formidable opponent as long as Lea is there and as long as we continue our status quo.
