I'm curious what can we as fans expect to see on the defensive side of the ball this coming season? How much of a difference will our defense look... will it turn more into a blitz team or what? I know Monte Kiffin's style of defense really relies on LBs and MLBs. It's interesting that Kiffin has already spoken, then later met with both of the 4-star LBs that we have committed this season. If anyone is more knowledgeable on Monte Kiffin's style of play and what we can expect to see please tell.

Monte plays a cover 2 defense which relies heavily on speed. I think he'll probably end up modifying that scheme just a little for the college ranks.

I saw on ESPN where Jaws figured out that Monte actually only uses the Tampa 2 20% of the time in games. But bc he never has to sub personnel to run his other schemes you never know when it is coming. This is what makes it so successful. Derrick Brooks was also just on and he said that Monte preaches 4 things Play fast, Play hard, Play together, and Play smart. I think we will see a very disciplined cohesive unit. Its great to hear everyone talking about how great and smart and legendary our next DC is. Our defense will be very fun to watch next year.

So does his scheme lean more towards the pass or run? Is he a big blitzer, man coverage, zone type coach.... I'm just curious how he's going to use our skill players and such.

Let's wait to hear he is coming first...As far as the scheme it is all based on speed and linbackers that can cover when needed...He blitzes a lot from the corner position but I am sure it will have to be tweeked for the college game...It is a hell of a system

Oh he is coming, you can take that to the bank. Even if the Bucs won the Super Bowl, he would still come. This is his last season with the Bucs. Glazer didn't even deny it when asked.

I read the game previews from The Sports Network for almost all NFL and lots of NCAA games when I handicap games. When reading the one for tonights game they mentioned Monte right off the bat. Here is the one sentence about him, but it speaks volumes:

"Monte Kiffin's unit is No. 4 in the league in total defense (279.5 yards per game), No. 3 against the pass (184.1 yards per game), third in takeaways (24), and has astonishingly allowed just one rushing touchdown on the entire season."

The Sports Network - National Football League

We have a good defense now, but I am pumped to have Monte on board!! I don't know why defensive recruits would not be lined up a mile long to play for him.

I just hope we can recruit the personnel to make Coach Monte's Tennessee 2 defense work..... Coach Monte Kiffin is great but he isn't a god. Without the horses he will not be able to live up to our expectations.

It does look and sound like Coach Lane Kiffin is out beating the bushes for the recruits that can make his offense and Monte's defense shine. :good!:

Go Vols :td:

Mullen and Meyer at Florida will be sweating bullets the weak of the UT-UF game, trying to figure out Monte's coverages, stunts, zone dogs and blitzes. That may be why Mullen is interviewing at other programs.

The Nebraska Ruud(sorry can't keep them straight) brother that currently plays for Tampa Bay was on the radio this morning. He said it definitely takes a couple of years to get down all the ins and outs of Monte's defense. So I don't expect it to be all that great next year. I think we will give up a lot of big plays during the adjustment. But we will probably make some big plays too, I just hope it's enough to offset the ones that go against us.

I don't think anyone will be scared until we prove that we can run this style of defense. Remember the pros have unlimited practice time and plenty of talent. We have neither. I know there are those here in the Nation with high expectations, but implore you to settle down and realize next year won't be that much better than this one. 7-5 or 8-4 would be a great start for Kiffin considering we don't have a quarterback. If we don't pick up more 1st downs that defense is really going to struggle to implement the new system. I wouldn't expect Monte to be able to use his full playbook until year 2.

I guess this means we won't give up first downs on QB draws, screens and passes over the middle on 3rd and longer than 15.

Monte Kiffin very rarely relies on the Tampa 2 anymore. He knows how to keep up with the evolution of the game. He runs the Tampa 2 about 20% of the time.

I believe it is more along the lines of discipline, development, and ability to make changes on the go. A system by itself
is only as good as the adjustments U can make. DT talent has to go up with depth in this league.

I agree. I think our DT depth will be good especially if D. Williams decides to stay, which I doubt

DT
Edwin Herbert
Johnathan Hollins
Montori Hughes
Chase Nelson
Victor Thomas
Donald Langley

6 man rotation doesnt look bad.

How big is Hughes? thought he was a DE

I've seen from 255-275. I have seen him listed at both positions so Im not sure where he will be. Our DE's will be even better though.

DE
Ben Martin
Chris Walker
Wes Brown
Marlon Walls
Gerald Williams
Willie Bohannon
Steven Fowlkes

Herbert will be closer to pt than some of the other new guys. Still think we could land 1 more, we got open spots. Less Williams if he stays.
