Earlier I posted my O and D nominees, but here is my special teams play:

I think it was in the 80s, whenever Carl Pickens played for us. Vols at LSU. LSU scored just before halftime to take lead from us and the momentum. The ensuing KOff was housed by Pickens, totally taking all the wind out of their sails.😆

Runner-up might during more recent win at LSU, Brooks recovering fumble on early kickoff to set tone for rest of game. 😁

If 117 yards is being shut down then I think we have two ideas of what those words mean. He was shut out of the end zone but he still had over 5ypc and right around his season average. They also had a guy named after male genitalia playing QB.
We won 34-13 and held McFadden out of the endzone the whole day. I dont give a **** what he did between the goal lines, he was their star player and had no impact on the game. I'd say that counts as shutting him down.

He did have an impact, his QB just so happened to be a penis with ED 🤷‍♂️

Offense: Dobbnail Boot, just because that’s the only time we have won a game on a play like that, and at the time it felt like an enormous win.

Defense: Billy Ratliff jumping on the ball after pushing the All American Brandon Burlsworth into Clint Stoerner, causing Stoerner to “stumble and fumble.”

Special teams: McGrath just barely getting it over the crossbar to beat Bama.

Its been mentioned by many, but without the Arkansas fumble, UT doesn't get a national title that year and I can't think of a more significant positive play for UT on defense.
If we were talking team defensive games, I would have said shutting down Bo Jackson.
I went with Al Wilson vs Florida that same year. If he doesn't do the things he did that night Arkansas wouldn't have mattered. You can pick any of the many plays he made that day

My favorite defensive play was Darryl Hardy blocking a Notre Dame field goal attempt and Floyd Miley recovering it for an 85-yard touchdown. Instead of entering halftime down 34-7, the Vols cut the deficit to 31-14, setting up the Miracle at South Bend.

Edit -- I suppose I should call this my favorite special teams play.

I had to step outside because I was pissed and about to give up on the game. Came back to the tv just in time to see the block.

I was nearly late to my best friend’s wedding that I was in because I would not leave until the game was over.

O-Mose Phillips what time is it screen while soaked in rain and bourbon.
D-Al Wilson dancing on the line and crushing florida qb
ST-Dale Carter kickoff return v UF
Honorable mention-every kickoff wedge bust by Victor Brown. Most of you likely not around back then and you can’t do what he did anymore but he was a big strong fast dude and would go parallel to the ground at about 20 mph and destroy kickoff wedges as Neyland all went “Booooom!” at impact.
