For the new HC in his first year? I only ask because the combined records of Spurrier, Saban, Richt and Meyer in the first year of their current jobs is 31-18 (58%). I can only imagine the outrage on this board if the new man in charge wins only 58% of his games in year one.

Nobody will be outraged. A winning season in his first year would be good enough for me.

I think it all depends on how the new guy losses.
If UT is jumping offsides in the redzone and throwing the ball 10 yards into the upper deck en route to a 30 - >10 point defeat then I am sure there will be some outrage.
But if they go to the swamp and play with heart and motivation and loose 24-17, 24-21, then I think fans will be more patient.

To add to that, even Pete Carroll at USC went 6-6 in his first season.

My expectations are for the guy to get a 5 year shot, assuming he doesn't tank worse than we are now:

Year 1 - Better than this year, which should be possible with the talent we have. At least a bowl game, even if it's a ****** one. Also, I would like to see us be competitive at this point. Not an excessive amount of blowouts and us looking like a bunch of middle school football players out there.

Year 2 - We need to at least finish behind UGA and UF in the east. Also, better bowl, probably a New Year's Day bowl, but if he doesn't get that, it won't crush me. Signs of improvement are beginning to show, and we win a few games that we aren't expected to win

Year 3 - By this point, we definitely need to be going to a New Year's day bowl, and becoming more competitive, and we start laying it to a few of our rivals (Georgia).

Year 4 - By this point, we should have or be close (maybe a tiebreaker loss) to the SEC championship game.

Year 5 - I full out expect an SEC championship by this point.

My expectations are attainable, I suppose, lol. Of course, a NC in his first year would be hella nice.

Anything less than 8 wins will be dissappointing. Whoever inherits this team will have some good talent and some good recruits coming in. The fanbase will be more supporting than it's ever been and ridiculously loud at the home games. I wouldn't be surprised if we win 10 games next year.

I think that the new HC will do pretty well in his first year, better than this year, at least.

agree 100 % 8 to 10 wins next season will be a bit much to ask. The next coach has some work to do... like find an O line, a QB, Running Back, a Defense that doesnt play 10 yards off the ball, and there is that whole disipline thing.... but other than those "little things" he should be ok :)

For me, first year is about more than wins and losses. It is about establishing the foundation for long term success. In other words, instilling discipline, mental toughness, character and a winning attitude. Do those things and the wins will come.

That being said, anything less than a 7-5 record and I'll be slightly concerned, because our new coach will be somewhat lucky in that the "cupboard" is not bare. The most glaring deficiency will be lack of an experienced and talented QB.

IMO the program isn't in that bad of shape, talent wise. I think TN needs a few pieces, i.e. QB, OL, K and they should be okay next year. I would be dissappointed if they don't make it to a bowl next year.

if we don't win at least 8 games next year with our schedule and our talent heads will have to roll

For the first year, it isn't just about wins and losses. (Although we should certainly win more than this year) It is all about UT being competitive in big games. We weren't really competitive against Florida, Georgia, and Bama this year. If we get competitive, the wins will start coming.

That being said, we aren't going to be great next year. However, we shouldn't lose by a combined 59-15 against our two biggest rivals.
