I know this has been talked about before but what do you think are the chances of Butch keeping Shoop for the next couple of years? He's a very intelligent DC who knows how to do his job and he will make a great HC one day. Question is, when will he take that next step? I know it's still early in the season but hopefully Butch gives him a nice raise cause so far, he's been worth every penny. I'd also hate to go through another position change next year. Thoughts?

He is under contract

I'd say we get 3 years out of Shoop. Most schools are looking for offensive minded head coaches.

Break out the garbage truck and dump a huge pile of money on his lawn. He's an amazing DC and we need to do whatever it takes to keep him.

I hope it doesent come down to that.

He literally just checked off the biggest challenge according to his boss, Butch Jones.

Does he own any property in East Tennessee? I guess it's too late to marry a UT cheerleader.

We don't know how good he is just yet. Our defense is in the upper-middle pack of the country right now. However, the defense has played better while under pressure which is a huge difference from last year. I'd like to see them put a complete game together, though.

I say he will be here for a couple years at least. He has been a head coach before and it didn't go so well.

So let's worry about the "what ifs" instead of enjoying the ride we're on! SMH Why is so hard for many fans to enjoy the good... instead of creating/worrying about "the bad" that's not even an issue right now?

I would be surprised if hes here past another year. Someone is gonna drop about 4 mil a year on him to teach players how to run around on a field. If we are 10-2 or better after this year with a top 25 D, then if the right program calls hes gone as well.

Very good for next year. And who knows beyond that?

I don't think he will be a candidate for a Power 5 HC job after one year at UT. He'd need to take a pay cut to take a lower level HC job.

Beyond that, as the pay improves for coordinators it is likely that more of them will choose a different career path. If I were an UGA fan, there would already be a few things about Smart that would make me feel uneasy. Muschamp was once one of the hottest names because of his success as a coordinator.

Maybe Shoop's dream is to be an HC. Maybe he'll take the plunge when the time comes. Or maybe... he'll be more like Chavis and a few others who don't want the HC job.

Shoop is suppose to be the real deal. If we had been talking about him maybe being overrated during halftime Saturday, I might not have argued with you, But he got us through without Kirkland, Reeves-Maybin, and Sutton, and making less trusted backup players like Jumper, McDowell, and Moseley look like solid players.

You do everything you can to keep a DC who can do that happy. So, unless there is a major falling out later in the season, the odds of Butch trying to retain Shoop is high. That is taking your topic line at face value.

As to Shoop taking a HC spot, who knows? Most assume he wants that, but there are plenty of career coordinators who have never wanted a HC job, or have been a HC and it didn't work out. Then, there is the David Cutcliffes who do well the second time around.

No way I can know Shoop's mindset. He and I don't frequent the same Waffle Houses. But as of today, and based on the last 30 minutes I have seen of his work, I am damn glad we have him, and hope that doesn't change for awhile.

The questions will be: Does he want to be a HC badly enough to take a pay cut and go to a lower level? Will the number of Power 5 openings be large enough that he might get an opportunity somewhere like UK? Would he actually take a chance on a program like UK knowing that it could just as easily end his career as an HC as launch it?

Just to add to one portion of your post, I'm pretty sure Shoop has been a HC before.

With the recruits, the opportunities, and the lifestyle he is offered here, it would take a monumental paycheck to make him leave. He dropped everything to be a part of this program. People WANT to be here right now. You can thank stone cold Jones for that next time you see him.

Did he flame out pretty hard the last time he was a HC? I was under the assumption he didn't want to be a HC anymore??

I think his family also loves being in TN. Seems like I remember reading that they wanted to stay in the state if at all possible.

He was the HC at Columbia University (FCS Ivy League) from 2003-2005 and was fired after compiling a 7-23 record there.

Maybe because this is a message board and people like to discuss things.
