Ever since this season began to take a bad turn and the heat was turned up on Coach Fulmer, I've been reading the threads on who should be the next head coach of the Vols. I've read all of our suggestions and there are some reasonable suggestions. Others have been wishful thinking and others just crazy. The one thing I think we in the VN have not thought about much or I have not seen it yet is this: Will the University of Tennessee hire a minority coach? This question will now have to be addressed, I think, since I read this morning the following article in the USA Today. (Link posted at the end of the thread.)
The pressure may mount on MH to go that direction. That is okay, but what coordinators are out there who would be considered?

I just don't know who would be qualified for this job. Track record seems to be a requirement.

Strong or Gill would be the only two I could think of. And race has nothing to do with the fact they are both outstanding coaches.

Strong has been mentioned little if any, and would be a wise choice as a candidate. If nothing else, he could teach the defense a thing or two to keep us in hte game while the offense figures out how to score.

I have seen a lot of names discussed without once mentioning the color of their skin. Why? Because it makes doesn’t matter (although I find it comical some people are concerned if the candidate curses or not). The only thing that matters is their qualifications. UT will get the most qualified regardless of race.

Strong has stated that he will no longer take "courtesy" interviews just so a school can say they interviewed a minority....he screens the interviews before he accepts

Good for him. It's ridiculous that schools must make "courtesy" interviews. If anything, it's insulting to the Charlie Strongs of the coaching world.

Totally agree. I think the blame can fall mostly on the NCAA and the media for making such a big deal about race instead of hiring a coach based on qualifications. Black, white, yellow, blue, green, I really don't care what our new coach looks like as long as we can get to some BCS bowls in the near future.

Even Sly (MSU) had to finally put his foot down on all the media. Too bad he missed the throat.

What are the chances of this non-issue (that people, especially ESPN, want to make an issue) going away?

THe only Minority Coach I would think they might consider would be Charlie Strong....Having said that I wouldnt want a minority coach because typically they do not do well at the head coaching level....and that statement is NOT racist at all....just go and look at the records of active minority coaches as well as their success or lack of....Tyrone Willingham is a classic example of what I am talking about...Lovie Smith wouldnt be that bad but even he is not getting over the hump, he and TOny Dungy are the best 2 in the business IMO....with Dungy obviously the only minority coach to win the SB....
