Okay Guys,

I've been on this board for some time now, and this is my first thread so bear with me.

First of all, thanks to all you fellow Vols fans on this site! I live in Central Ohio and this helps me stay connected to my beloved Vols through good times, and whatever you want to categorize what we're going through now.

I've seen the arguments back and forth for a new coaching staff. But I haven't seen this opinion expressed before so I thought I'd throw it out there as food for thought.

What if we keep Fulmer (hang on, there's more), but only in a figurehead position? I look at Penn State who has turned JoPa into the face of the program, and allowed him to capitalize on his strengths (recruiting), and allow his coordinators to manage the play calling aspect.

So while I'm perfectly fine with Hamilton cleaning house and starting over, I think if we keep Phil as the Head Coach, and bring in new OC and DC, and maybe even some assistants, we could accomplish the changes necessary. By doing this we could bring new life into our coaching ranks, encourage new ideas (at least more current ideas) for both sides of the ball, and not take the big hit that a program goes through recruiting-wise when it transitions to a new regime.

Then Phil could still bring in top talent, and we'd have capable coaches in place to actually utilize the skilled players, not simply allow them to rot away on the bench, or worse have their skills decline in the current systems.

What do you guys think?

I think comparing Paterno to Fulmer is like drawing parallels between General Patton and Sgt. Carter.

My thinking along this line was based on the premise that Hamilton won't actually fire Fulmer, but could force him to make significant changes in his staff. And possibly take this reduced role.

I should have stated that, I wouldn't realistically expect Fulmer to volunteer for this type of change.

Fulmer would not do that. He would have done that after the 05 season if he was going. He will be forced out before he makes dramatic changes.

How long was PSU on the decline before last season though? 1 Conf. Championship since '94, and they had MANY more (4 losing seasons) to endure. I think UT has more riding on it than PSU does. Fulmer won't last this season (and that's turning in a mediocre season, much less a losing one). Paterno was kept around WAY too long, and should have left in 1999.

In order for your idea to really work or be credible, Fulmer would have to do just that, "take a reduced role" and a very reduced role at that. In no way shape or form could he have any bearing on what plays are drawn up, who starts in games and who doesnt etc.... nothing. All he could do is be an Ambassador for the school and thats about it. IF that helps in recruiting then so be it. Otherwise it would be nothing more than what we have now with Fulmer "yea or Ney" in meetings etc . basically still calling the shots from behind the scenes. THat does not need to happen. We need a wave of freshness to come ashore and bring with it new times. This is exactly what Fulmer brought here once he replaced Majors 15 years ago. Its time for that to happen again.

It might just work. But phil is to proud to go out that way. No i'am afraid its going to have to be the hard way. Phil won't have it any other way.

The only thing I think Fulmer should be involved with is being the head recruiting coordinator. He has shown he can recruit, and if he endorses the program, but has nothing to do with it, I don't see that being a program.

I don't have any problem with Fulmer, but I don't want to see him doing to UT what Paterno did to PSU.

Fulmer shouldn't get the credit for all of the recruits. Trooper is the reason for almost all of the 06-07 recruiting class. I read about every recruite on rivals.com and most of them said the coach that influenced them the most was Trooper. It would be a big mistake to let Trooper leave.

Phil dosnt do the recruiting like he used to he has
his assistants do that. thats why everyone likes
taylor so much we had to bring him in a few years
ago to breath new life into that.
