They banked on JGs experience and hopeful improvement on a season that ended well last year. Even with his limitations. Plus the fact that the preseason didn't lend itself to a typical opportunity to get other options ready. I'm not sure how much of that is an excuse and how much is just the facts of a bad situation.
My take on the management of the position would be more severe with a typical off-season.
The question now is do you go with Shrout for awhile and have more playbook to work with. Or throw Bailey out there understanding he is gonna have some heavier restrictions but hopefully works through them as he goes.
Neither is gonna great from the start but its the corner they are painted in to.
