We're on the edge of something great

Muschamp set the defense up to contain FB from breaking anything long off the edges. We tried and were rather successful running a middle screen one time which took advantage of the middle of the field. Passes to TEs in the middle or seam would have worked but once the game started passing to a UT TE seemed to never happen. You can best believe young FB and our offense will see that contain defense Muschamp was successful with against us until we demonstrate we can punish it.

I can almost guarantee that there was a hot receiver on those pass plays. QB was just too frazzled to recognize the pressure.
I watched the film replay from several podcasts today. There were plenty of guys open that he pulled up on but none short.
You don't learn to release at that speed in practice, only live experience. Thats why failing to get an experienced QB in the portal was the same as throwing in the towel on the big games.

Moral victories are bs but we have our elite DC finally. Offense will get fixed imho. Heupel has produced elite offenses at several places with several different qbs.
But he's a head coach here with just UCF predating his TN tenure. There he went from ,923 to .769 to .600. His height in 2022 here was .864, then .692, .769, .615. If we take just his OC career, maybe he should be TN's OC but not HC.

The jury is out.

When was Heupel’s last signature win? He underperformed last season and felt it passable to enter the season with a true freshman QB. He has confidence in his job security.
I have an answer for you. The entire season last season was his most recent signature win. Every single win last season was because cjh brought in an absolute unknown at the last second because he lost his five-star quarterback. Every one of those games that we won last season was a signature win. Because you don't win in the SEC with a no-name quarterback who's had no time to practice with the team. Yet we did it. Not only do we do it but we did it with style. Our no name quarterback became a media darling and if he were starting right now, we would have a win over Texas and a number one team in the nation. Cjh has pulled more rabbits out of his hat and the last 5 years than the average football coach would have to do over a career. And that is why he deserves to have confidence about his job security.

All would be valid if it wasn’t his job to win football games, at $10 Million a year. He did not have a signature win last season and actually underperformed. That’s obvious.

And why is he having to pull “rabbits from hats” in year 5? He should have a well established program with a serviceable backup QB, which I’m not sure we have even now. Well paid for sure, but not serviceable.

It was the lack of ability or willingness to make adjustments Saturday that really concerned me.
Yes, I know when the defense is keeping you in the game, you want to avoid mistakes on offense.
But Saturday he just looked like he didn’t even have a plan B.
A Heupel offense that only gave you one offensive TD in a 60 minute game would have been unthinkable to me in the past, I don’t care who the opponent is.

This. First time under Heupel that I find myself concerned about the offense. Even under Nico, who also really struggled, they found different ways to score. Now it seems like it's run it up the gut most plays, deep shot and then rinse and repeat. No screens, no draws. I will say they did an old school Nebraska option pitch play that worked well...and then I don't recall them running it again.

Shovel pass might have been interesting too.

Now, can we work on brevity?
Hmmm

How is this?

For years, we could score 70 and still give up 71. Not anymore. In less than a year, Jim Knowles has turned a bottom-of-the-barrel defense into a top-25 unit. Imagine how good it will be by season's end and next year.
Everybody needs to grow up. We have a true freshman quarterback and a redshirt freshman backup, and we knew all preseason that quarterback would be a weak link. We were also promised maulers up front, but the line is underperforming. With a young quarterback, they must give him time and open holes for the run game. They didn't, and they'll face defenses like Texas's several more times.
We have one of the nation's best running backs and excellent depth behind him. The passing game is weak, but we know what chicken salad our coach can make out of chicken s***. He'll make corrections, and the offense will improve soon.
Playoffs this year? No. We're not good enough as a total package. But we're on the cusp of a roster that can contend every year. That's not rah-rah "we'll get 'em next year" b*******. It's a legitimate statement.
So hold your water. We'll take some lumps and surprise some people. I see us at 8-4 minimum with a bowl-game blowout. We might sneak into the playoffs, but I'd rather skip them than get throttled like we did against Ohio State.
"It's his sixth year. Why are we rebuilding again?" Because this is the NIL era. You can have a stacked roster one season and lose half your skill players to bigger paydays the next. When your best starter leaves and you can't afford a replacement of his caliber, you plug the hole with whoever you can find, and that torpedoes your roster year after year.
Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&M, and Oregon can buy deeper rosters. We're about $20 million short, and until we close that gap, we'll never truly contend.
So instead of opening our mouths, let's open our wallets and donate to the NIL fund.

Re-read my quote that you quoted and let me know where I said anything about firing or replacing him. There’s a good number of people on here who can not be objectively honest.
No you're not going to crawdad back from what you said. This isn't about objective honesty. You tried to say that he didn't yet prove to you that he had reached the level of Mark Richt. The guy who broke the Bama curse, the Florida curse, recruited 2 of the best QB In the nation twice now, just picked up the best running backs in the nation, just hired a world beater DC, actually got us to a #1 ranking, AND got us to the playoffs somehow does not meet your description of a good coach. If he's not the coach that you want to see here, who do you legitimately think you're going to replace him with?

I just wander why we can't run outside screens, tight end screens, option plays instead of running it up the middle hoping that the running back will get past the line of scrimmage. Slow down Texas pass rush with some screens. Do something different. Who is calling the plays?
Such a very true statement!!!

If he was the coach you think he is a rabbit wouldnt be needed.

Tennessee isn’t anywhere close to being $20 million away from the top echelon. From all reports, Tennessee’s roster is right around $40 million this year, which puts them in the top 10 in the country.
Which makes this year all the more painful. We have been spending the money, but not getting results. Didn’t beat a winning team last year and looked completely unprepared to win the first conference game. D looked great, but we will face much better QB’s than Arch.
