We're on the edge of something great

We lost. As always, we have tons of guys in here ready to put the coach on the hot seat and ready to cancel the rest of the season. But I'm not seeing it that way. We lost to the number one team in the nation and actually stood a chance of winning it despite our offense being inept. We have struggled for years with a defense that could not stop a division 2 team. We've had the offense to run up 70 points on somebody and a defense that couldn't stop them from putting up 71. But that's not the case anymore. I genuinely believe that Jim Knowles has already taken us from a bottom of the barrel defense to somehow being a top 25 defense. it didn't even take a full year. If our defense is this good after one spring and summer practice session, I can only imagine how good we're going to look by the end of this season and coming into next season. Everybody needs to grow up and recognize that we had a true freshman quarterback and a a redshirt freshman backup. We've talked about it all preseason. We've known that we are going to have a weak link at quarterback. We were told we were going to have mallers on the offensive line. That is not the case. Our offensive line is not performing nearly to the level they should be. And with a freshman quarterback, they have to carry the load for him to give him the time and to slow the game down. We know we're going to have to run it and it's that lines job to make room. They couldn't get it done in this game. And they're going to face defenses as capable as Texas multiple times this year. We have one of the best running backs in the nation and several others behind him that are excellent. Our passing game is looking a little weak. But we know who our coach is and we know what kind of chicken salad he can make out of chicken s*** when it comes to an offense. I'm sure the coach was just as surprised as the rest of us about our inability to move the ball. He'll make some corrections. He'll be able to improve the offense before this season gets much further along. Is he going to take us to the playoffs this season? No. There is no playoffs for us this season. We're just not that good as a total package. But we're on the cusp of having a roster that can do it year in and year out. No this is not more that rara we'll get them next year b*******. It's a legitimate statement. Everybody just needs to hold their water. We're going to take some lumps this season. We're going to surprise some people this season. I think that the probability of us beating a 7 and 5 season is a hell of a lot higher than us going south of that. I think we are a minimum 8 and 4 team this season And we're probably going to annihilate somebody in a bowl game. There's always the outside shot we sneak into the playoffs but we're not going to do well. I would just assume not show up in the playoffs as show up and then get throttled like we did against Ohio State. I'm sure everybody's going to pile on with the blah blah blah "it's his 6th year coaching. why are we in a rebuilding year again?" It's because this is the nil era. Nothing is the same anymore. You can have a stacked roster coming into the fall and have a ton of talent playing back up. Then the next season half your skill players transfer out for more money. You're back to square one trying to plug in players. Then you have to figure in the financial aspect of it. You had a player who was your best starter. He leaves for significantly more money. So what are you going to do? You didn't have the money to pay him to stay. You don't have the money to buy a replacement of his caliber. So what do you do? You go get somebody. Anybody. You've got a hole to plug and you try to find the best plug you can find. But that torpedoes your roster year in and year out. Teams like Ohio State, Texas, Texas A&m, Oregon all have enough money to go out and buy fatter rosters. we are not there yet. We are about $20 million away from having enough money to compete with the top echelon. Until we can close that Gap, we're never going to truly be a contender. So instead of everybody opening up their mouth and giving an opinion, we should be opening up our wallets and donating personally to the NIR fund.
The team needs to be judged for what they do for the entire season instead of one game. There needs to be big time improvements on offense and that starts with playing and coaching much better against Auburn. I don’t believe that the barn is a great team, however, they will have enough players on defense to give our OL fits if the unit can’t figure out twist and stunt protection. The defense is light years better than expected. Hopefully, Heupel can correct the offense.

I am beginning to wonder since he made zero adjustments to assist his young QB. I now believe the only thing he's got going offensively is the tempo. Tempo is simply about making the defense decide quickly or snapping the ball before they are ready, nothing to do with strategy.
He couldn’t adjust what mattered which was our Oline getting absolutely owned the 3 to 4 rushers they sent.

Tennessee isn’t anywhere close to being $20 million away from the top echelon. From all reports, Tennessee’s roster is right around $40 million this year, which puts them in the top 10 in the country.

That’s the spirit. Spend everybody’s else’s money to run a program the school benefits from. Future NIL = spend until they have no more to give. I’m definitely not a Vol fan. I enjoyed watching them compete before NIL was even a thought and throughly loved it.
Kids got scholarships / education for life after football. Coaches made $1M if they were good. Fans were probably happier then than now. If it takes another $15M to just be as good as the high level, I don’t care if every high dollar player leaves this week and goes where they pay them more. I’ll still be excited to watch who’s left. Winning a NC is a memory for players. Some fans apparently live their life through what someone else accomplishes.

Well, that’s one way to look at it.

. . . Faizon is young, but at some point you can’t be to timid and coach can’t coach him timid. He needs to keep playing smart but he needs to trust his instincts. Sometimes you have to make the tough throws in tighter windows. And you have to make the accurate throws on the ones that are open. . . .

This!

It’s like I tell my rugby teammates. I pass the ball to the hole, not the man. My expectation is you’re hitting the hole full speed and you catch the ball.

So what would you do, just stand there on the sideline and let the QB get mashed? No, you would be forced to call short stuff and tell the QB to get the ball out of his hand. You can't take 10 sacks for 80 yards. None of the reporters even asked why.

We have definitely found our mark richt.
If we are talking about a guy who had a 0.740 win % (145-51) over 15 years and 35 points better than Vince Dooley I’d probably take it. Kirby is special…and special guys like Neyland or Bear or Saban or Kirby just don’t come around often. I’m longing for the the time when we get upset at only winning 10 games

I can almost guarantee that there was a hot receiver on those pass plays. QB was just too frazzled to recognize the pressure.
