about UT and UGA at 11:45 PM on September 1. If Tennessee can't beat Cal, they can't win the East. UGA, with all of their alleged defensive holes, faces an Oklahoma State offense that should be as good as any in the Big 12. A couple of friends of mine whose opinions I genuinely respect, swear the Cowboys will beat the Dawgs.

Believe it or not, there are some down here who are quietly saying that UGA will have at least 2 losses by the time we see them.

That sums it up nicely.

Your second point shows how badly the Vols need to beat Florida as well. We can't count on GA to handle them for us.

This sounds ridiculous but I think UGA is either going 10-2 or 7-5. I don't see a middle ground for them. Either they are better where people perceive weakness or they are going to really struggle.

That is truly the way I view the entire SEC east. The traditional top three can all lean one way or the other, and if Spurrier works some of the magic he is capable of, throw SC into that mix as well.

If they go 10-2, my hat is off to Mark Richt. Their early schedule is just brutal, and they finish with Florida, Auburn and Ga. Tech. There aren't too many easy ones in there for them this year.

I would be thrilled if OSU exposes them early.

Only if we don't get toasted on the coast. If that happens, I don't really care what anyone else does. I take that back, I'll be rooting hard for TCU and West Virginia to do well and Tampa Bay to go 4-12.

Are you implying that UT might be able to get Rich Rodriguez? I think he's pretty happy in West Virginia. I was extremely confident when I said he wouldn't go to Bama. I don't see him coming to UT, either.

I think Rodriguez loves West Virginia. However, his turning down Alabama had more to do with the revolving door in Tuscaloosa than it did with his love for Morgantown.

If UT loses, it matters how they lose. One advantage to playing a team that's nationally respected... and that might be pretty good, is that you can go on to have a good or even great season. UGA however would indeed be exposed if they lose to OSU.

BTW, I'm optimistic but I kind of think the Vols are in that same category that Hat put UGA in. Although I do not think winning all 12 is out of the realm of legitimate possibility. They don't play a single team that they can't compete with.

That would be true, if we were actually playing a nationally respected team. Outside of the media types who love to tout the chic teams, nobody respects Cal. There are a bunch of teams who would love to get a shot at the overrated Bears.

Cal isn't much better than OK State.

I suppose that's possible. However, I'm not sure he'd feel super-secure at a school that just fired a NC-winning coach with one of the highest career winning percentages in football.

I don't think he'd have any fear of replacing a coach who hadn't won a conference title in 9 seasons.

Maybe, but Fulmer's 98 season and the winning percentage and the most SEC wins in the past ten years, and all that crap would get brought up. Anyway, I'm not sure about the deal Rich was offered by Bama, but if it was like the deal Saban took, I don't think job security was a huge issue.

I seriously doubt that Rodriguez's offer was for more than half of what Saban received.

I think Bama was offering Rodriguez about $2 million per year. He's now making $1.75 million at West Virginia.

That's consistent with what I remember hearing.

Do you think UT would be willing to offer 3 million plus for Rodriguez? I don't think we'd be willing to offer anything greater than Fulmer's salary for Rich.

I think it depends on what the market for coaches is at the end of this season. I don't think Hamilton will use Fulmer's salary as a ceiling for a new hire. UT would pay $3 mil for a coach with the right resume.

The market will always be good for Rodriguez. West Virginia is the only team that's legit in the Big East (IMO), so he will continue to have success. After they beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl a couple years back, though, Rodriguez basically earned a $3 million dollar paycheck wherever he decides to go after West Virginia.
