I was expecting a refund that never came. When I went to the IRS website it showed nothing. Huh?
Looked at the software to see when I filed my return, and I didn't. So I filed it yesterday.
This CRS is the pits.

Here come penalties and fees.

Nope, hope not. Use to be no penalty if you owed nothing. I'm guilty of not requesting a extension. But we'll see.
Rules may be different for income tax compared to other taxes. I've failed to file reports/returns on time and it always cost me a fee.

Good luck.

yeah, sales tax is typically that way. A late filing pealty even if no tax due. Some local taxes.
If you are in business you have more responsibility.

Yep. one time I made all my 941 employer deposits, forgot me return and got robbed. I mean I get it but still it was painful.
I bet fees and penalties are harshest on businesses and less on individuals.

You should be fine since you are due a refund. If you get penalties

1. Write letter and state that you thought it got filed but it didn't due to technical errors . You should be able to show everytime you logged into TurboTax, etc...
2. If you live in Davidson County, try to find any type of connection to 2023 storms and you should get full waiver.

I had underpayment of estimated tax penalty and I got them waived due to 2023 storms...

I doubt you get a fine. Now, if you had owed, they would wait about 7 years to smack you so they get a bunch of interest added.
FYP. My experience with the Federal government is 7 years from their perceived infraction, they begin to pursue remedy from you - it’s the outside edge of their timeline, their penalties and interest are higher, and their apparent expectation is that your memory and documentation will fall short of making a significant challenge. The character and temperament of the assigned case officer will impact your experience. For a perceived $26 infraction, they wanted me to pay $1700 in principal and $thousands in interest. Without a lawyer, I negotiated this down to $88. The amended return caused the state to refund me $90. For my pain and headaches, I wound up $2 ahead.

Yeah, I'm a retired CPA so I'm at least familiar with the rules. Well, those I haven't forgotten.
I never worked in individual income tax so I'm certainly not a expert.
