Originally the Pioneers. Nickname Purple Aces originates to basketball game when rival coach told Evansville coach that he had five aces up his sleeve. Hey! At least it’s more original than Tigers.

While in college, I remember their basketball team wore short sleeve jerseys. Short sleeves are trendy again more than a decade after Evansville ditched its trademark look

Hopefully we treat them better than several did the IU’s coaching staff’s families. I know the HC’s wife and set with her for their entire game vs USM and asked how the experience had been and she said overall it was great and most everyone was nice. However, during our game her 5 yr old son and the other coach’s kids were chanting Let’s Go IU and an adult man began chanting “no f@@k you, no f@@k you” to a bunch of kids. The oldest kid belonging to the IU staff couldn’t have been more than 7.

Can’t say I've never cussed at a sporting event with kids around but I can say without reservation I’ve never directed it a group of 5 year olds.

I have a hard time believing a grown man chanted “f*** you” to a 5 year old. Maybe it happened, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that lady is embellishing the truth a bit. I was at the park all weekend and it was perhaps the least rowdy/vulgar I’ve seen in the big games I’ve been to.

Sounds like a likely story for someone who spent the weekend yelling obscenities at 5 year olds

I saw nothing bad out of any IU fan. Walked up and told Taylor’s parents that he was a good ballplayer. Sadly had to witness Foley’s father going through the motions parents do when their child is not having a good game. That was tough to see, you could tell the father wanted it so much and it was just not going according to plan. He was pacing and couldn’t watch and was shaking his head.
Southern Miss fans were the ignorant ones but not when they played us of course.

His dad walked right up behind me and we just looked at each other with the I know what you are going through eyes….I then watched him for the rest of the half inning in which his son got pulled in…pacing right behind me…going up to IU people he knew and shaking their hands like I am so sorry it’s happening this way. There will be better days for his son…comes with the territory in baseball but it’s simply not easy for the parents and those of us watching their parents.

That really sucks. His son had a tough task to contain our lineup. It would have been brutal for any pitcher, not just Foley. I’m sure once the hurt dies down they’ll look back and realize what a cool experience it was to be in that situation in the first place.

Who knows...when you are a draft eligible player going up against a bunch of draft eligible guys it may have cost you a little coin as well. Could make the sting of the loss even worse.

He bought 8 kids candy and apologized to the wives and said he got carried away and they were all just cheering for their team (IU folks). So I believe it occurred. To his defense he apologized and tried to rectify it. Just never needed to rise to that level; rectify it by catching yourself before it comes out.

There were a couple loudmouth UT fans near us, behind the IU dugout. IU fans got tired of it, and there was some loud jawing back and forth to the extent beefy Axis security guys came to the area, and one told a loud UT fan to knock it off some since UT was up by six "points." The Axis guy saying UT was up by six "points" got a bunch of laughs from people. At the end of the game, our section couldn't exit in front of the steps where the IU fans descended.

You were in the heat of it…I was down the left field line near the tabletops and above the visitor bullpen.

Guy had a bunch of liquid courage in him. He eventually started yelling about UT and IU playing basketball. We were surprised he was there last night- none of us thought he'd recover. He was not as loud or verbose, though.

Southern Miss people we saw weren't as bent out of shape. Most people around me were having a little good natured back and forth with #2 for USM. He took it all in stride, and he had some witty replies that made people chuckle. People around me wished him well.

I don’t no how we got to the point where people think it’s ok to ignore manners and decency just because a sporting event is taking place.

The bad I saw out of Southern Miss was in the second IU game as they were curb stomping them. Then I saw some attitudes as they were getting their teeth kicked in by us as well but it comes with the territory.

The one thing I most value from volnation.com is what I learn from the other posters. Like this thread.
I learned that if you're ever invited over to fryeguy93's house, don't wear anything you're hesitant to part with---'cause he will ask for it!

But sincerely, fryeguy93, thanks for the stats you so often provide. They're a wealth of objective data not everyone knows how to find.

I saw a drunk middle aged man walking on the concourse - I hope he was drunk anyway or he was just an ass.- yelling up at the IU fans on Saturday night. That was ridiculous.

I had two young boys wearing IU setting next to me before the game, they were in wrong section. And we had a great conversation before the correct seatholders arrived back. There was no sense being obnoxious to IU fans. Sure they're Big10 but they're not "really" Big10 like Ohio State people. I enjoyed speaking with the Illinois parents and fans during the monsoon weekend series with them as well. The USM fans - a few of them that I saw, deserved hell more than Hoosiers did.

Back to caps. I wish I had an Illinois and Indiana cap as well. Whenever I see the Illinois "I" logo I think to Henry Blake's story about wrapping the wrong leg and Tank Washington shooting out his porch light every year.
