The '85 team will forever be one of my favorites. In many ways that season was more magical to me than '98

Agree, that is one of my favorite teams as well. It was my freshman year which adds to the sentimentality, and I went to every game except Florida,

We were playing Auburn in 85 and Auburn had a 4th and 1 at the 50 and BO over the top got his bell rung by Jones, Jones met Bo at the top and knocked BO on his AZZ and we went on and kicked Auburn AZZ and as you would say the rest is history.

I had a sideline press pass when we stomped Miami in the Superdome. Dale autographed the #54 jersey I was wearing and still have today.
An undersized overachiever for his position. Thanks VFL Dale Jones. I'll be there 9/1 standing and cheering for him.

If I'm not mistaken, Dale Jones is the one that brought the "Today I give my all for Appalachian State" theme to App State football. The sign is beat up now from players hitting it as they leave the locker room.

Dale definitely loves his Vols. There's no question that he's a VFL! Can't wait to be in Neyland in 4 days!
Hope the ASU fans have a great time in Knoxville with the exception of the score. We welcome you to The Cathedral of College Football, Neyland Stadium.

Dale spoke at the Knoxville QB Club last year and he openly weeps when he talks about playing for the University of Tennessee. He loves the Big Orange and is a proud Volunteer.

For those of you too young to have seen him play I can only say that you'll have to trust us, he was a damn good football player. No player has ever had a bigger motor or more heart than that man. He truly loves UT and the fans love him.

Dale Jones would have been a two star recruit in today's ratings but he left UT with a 5-star career.

When it comes to Dale Jones, Bo Knows.

He also destroyed Testeverde and Miami in the Sugar Bowl. Thank you and rest in peace Coach Donahue.

I hope they do something for him at the game. A nice video tribute would definitely be appropriate and then let the crowd know he is the LB coach at Appy State. I would not have known that if not for this post.

He's one my all time favorites and the '85 Sugar Bowl is still probably my favorite bowl game of all time, with the only exception when we beat FSU for the NC.

That group he played with while here were some of the best to come thru Neyland. Darren Miller,Kelly Zeigler and Dale could play in any era. Overall, we have been blessed with linebackers.

I believe it was last season that Dale was honored in Neyland. It was on one of our open weekends. From the pics it looked like he was loving every minute of the celebration.

I believe you are correct, although I can't remember which game it was. I don't believe many fans know he's a coach at App State - I certainly had no clue.

Jones is a TRUE LEADER...

It would be hard for me to imagine a player that is the epitome of VOL-FOR-LIFE more than Jones....

You know--that '85 team really could've been and probably should've been 11-1 and playing for the National title in the Sugar Bowl that year....

A bunch of guys who played as a team and really did over-achieve....if the '99 or '01 team would've had half the heart of these guys--Fulmer would've had 3 NCs.....:salute:

The '85 team was special. The ties were brutal. Playing so well and leading UCLA by 16 in the 4th, then allowing 2 tds and 2 two point conversions. Then the Georgia Tech game following the win in Birmingham and the injury to Tony Robinson, the team had nothing that night. But, it was a magical season. And the beat down of the Canes, how sweet it was.
