Maurer has been slowed by a hamstring injury and “hasn’t been able to operate in all of our team periods” in recent practices, quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke said during a Zoom interview Wednesday. “I think Brian is another example of a guy that probably as a young guy last year didn’t know exactly every detail of what we’re trying to get accomplished, but continued to learn...He’s very talented. There’s no doubt. He brings a lot to the table from that standpoint. I think he’s grown up, and he’s matured. I think that’s a big part of becoming a professional, right? We preach about that every single day, how to be a pro, how to learn, how to study what’s important. I think you’re seeing that in Brian Maurer. He’s got as much talent as a lot of guys I’ve ever been around — the ability to throw the football from different platforms, be able to run the football...We just have to create some consistency with him, and that’s with all of them, but I think especially Brian.”

Weinke, like offensive coordinator Jim Chaney, said Shrout has found comfort entering his second season in Chaney’s offense. “J.T. is a guy that works his tail off,” Weinke said. “This guy, he studies the game. He spends extra time in here watching film. It’s important to him, and that’s evident. J.T. Shrout is very conscious of every move that he makes, and sometimes when you get to be too careful, you start to overthink. I think he needs to continue to trust himself. J.T. can make all the throws...He throws it as good as a lot of guys I’ve been around. I think his familiarity now with the offense is allowing him to operate at a much faster pace right now. We have to eliminate the mistakes, and that goes for all the quarterbacks.”

I take it from what he is saying - - neither one is ready.....

"He throws as good as a lot of guys I've been around" Didn't say as good as any of the guys I've been around....

All the QBs will be needed this year. 10 SEC game season gonna take its toll.

Two additional SEC games will be harder than three cupcakes.

We normally have 8 conference games, 1 decent OOC opponent, and 3 cupcakes. Replacing 3 full games, with a more a difficult conference opponent, is still less wear and tear on the team as a whole, and is not suddenly going to make it any more likely that our starting QB doesn't survive the season, as we are still netting 2 less games than a normal season.

I will try to explain - - he didn't say they were as good as ANY he has been around, stayed a notch below that by saying as good as a LOT he has been around.

So a negative context??? Sorry im not following train of thought...my brain may still be asleep

Bearded is right. It's not trading two additional SEC games for three cupcakes. It's trading two additional games and giving up three cupcakes and Oklahoma.

So if Oklahoma is the rough equivalent of one of those two SEC games, what we're really trading off is 1 SEC game versus 3 cupcakes.

I would agree with Bearded that, as much more challenging as the SEC game is than any of those cupcakes, the wear and tear of 3 games is greater than 1 game, no matter who the 1 is against.

He's right, I think. Not often I get to say that about Bearded, so I'm gonna when I can. :)

I honestly have no idea how you read that conclusion into that comment.

He used that same comment in reference to HB I believe. Unless I missed it... the only guy he didn't say it about is JG.

I think it is his way of saying a guy has a high level of talent without hacking off other talented guys he's coached.

We have a 10 game SEC schedule yes but we also have basically a tune up game before every big game except Auburn and A&M back to back late in the season. I think our schedule is easier than normal honestly. We usually have UF, UGA, South carolina, our rotating west opponent, and Bama all in a row

What do you base your claim RE QB's on? Do you think Bama, UF, UGA, et al are likely to use 3 QB's also?

Do you think that's historically common?

I won't claim to know what degree of difference there is between this schedule and the original one or which way would have been more favorable. But if UT protects the QB well and the QB gets the ball out on time and doesn't take physical risks outside the pocket (like Maurer did)... then the QB should stay relatively healthy,.

Disagree. Quality of opponent doesn’t factor into injuries as much as number of games. More time on the field means more risk of injury
Not disagreeing. I just do not know the statistics on this.

Are you stating a subjective opinion or have you seen statistical proof?

Did any SEC team not have to use at least two QBs last year?

As in lost their starting QB to injury, and were forced to play the backup?

Joe burrow played 15 games, Jake Fromm played 14 games, Kellen Mond played 13 games, Bo Nix played 13 games, Guarantano played 13 games.

Opinion based on logic but I would love to see a study that shows injury rate in non conf games vs conf games
Me too.

I think there were some studies when the season was expanded from 11 to 12 games... I didn't pay much attention to them at the time. I thought maybe you had found or saved one.

No, but I do know in the past the NFL players association has resisted the effort by the league to lengthen the season due to injury risk
