Well, that was a surprise.
i'll start with the TN/Ark game, obviously, and i'll start this off like the question, do you want the good news or the bad news first? most of the time, people choose the bad first, so that's what i'll start with.
1. if not for FG's in the 1st half, the game would have been over at half time. red zone production was not good, at least in regards to td/fg ratio.
2. play calling the 2nd half, after Foster's big run. looking back, they did the right thing, cause our d did hold up. but going thru it, i couldn't help but think we HAD to put up another 20 pts in the 2nd half to win. turns out, ball control and defense actually worked. just didn't expect the consistancy from the D....and rightfully so.
those are the two things that stood out from an otherwise stellar performance. and the word stellar applies because the defense made it happen. w/out the defense in this game, eh hem, we lose..imagine that?
so on to the good, which there was plenty of:
1. coaching. i don't think it's too difficult to out coach Nutt, who seemed at odds with himself thru out the day to just feed his two headed monster. the penalties starting mounting, the pass started making it's way on to the feild, and by the time DMac got his yards, they were down 3 td's. the 1st 4th down they went for, both FJ and Dmac are on the sidelines???? in any event, it was obvious that CPF and co. had a game plan, they worked it in practice, and executed it to almost perfection, save the red zone production mentioned earlier. that's two games so far this year that i fee confident in saying that TN was well prepared and well coached for a game.
2. the defense. obviously, they showed up. eveyrone contributed, berry had his picks, D line got a couple of sacks, Hef didn't whiff on what could have been one of the bigger plays in the game stopping Dmac on that 3rd down toss sweep, McCoy and Mayo both had good games and the def. backs did a good job as well. one of the better def. efforts i've seen since the 05 season....3rd down stops in the 1st half were huge, 2 big 4th down stops....just a tremendous effort against a team that no one thought you could stop, myself included. contain, slow down? nah....you DID shut them down. Kudos.
3. Off. Line. protection, good. run blocking, much better. though we only broke a couple of runs, they were able to generate enough push at times to make our running game relevant to the game, and i thought we did a good job of rotating fresh RB's in the game...MH, AF, and LC all got meaning ful carries and we were able to continually send fresh legs against their front.
4. Rb's...all three had a good game, but i'm getting more and more impressed wtih Hardesty. AF obviously had the big play...but as he said, all he had to do was run forward....blocking up front on that play was great. Creer will get nothing but better.
5. WR's. Noting special, but came up with KEY receptions to keep drives going and two TD receptions. efficient, and didn't turnover the ball.
6. special teams, save the one return in the 1st half, and the missed f/g, the rest of the day worked out very well. the KR after their FG was huge. Rogan's young, but i like what i see so far.
7. attitude. 4th down on your 45 on the 1st drive of the game. go for it, get it, got it. def swarming to the ball. excited bench, excited and celbrating after key plays..........the attitude was there. the mentality was there. we were there to win this game. need to keep that up.
so, i guess you can tell i'm pretty pleased. it had it's fair share of moments that had me sweating, don't get me wrong...like the entire 3rd quarter pratically...and most of the 4th....but all in all, the game plan was good, they executed it and the result was a 3 TD win at home. i will take that every time.
now, can we do that for THREE more weeks!!!!!
i hope so....GO VOLS!!
elsewhere:
OSU/Ill....the spread makes a difference. that was one of the most impressive 8 minute drives i've ever seen that didn't result in any points. If you appreciate old school, ball control football, then you had to be impressed with Illinois on the last possession. they ran the clock out with 8 minutes to go....on the road.....against #1 Ohio State. Ron Zook....you da man.......great win. oh, and ha, ha OSU!!!!
GA/Aub....i like the black jerseys....i don't like Brandon Cox. that's two years in a row he can't do diddly against GA. and Auburn's def picked a nice game to disappear. credit GA's off. line and Moreno and davis...they were outstanding and the WR's for GA decided to show up....if i didn't know better, you look at how GA and TN started the year off, and look at how both are playing now...the though has to occurr....these are two young teams, are we finally seeing these teams develop a little bit as the year gets close to the end? i think if you're a GA or TN fan, you have to hope so, and i for one think so.
SC/FL....ok, i'm just done with SC....they suck. and i'm a little over the SOS parade. yes, he's a great coach, yes he's an all timer and all that....but if you don't have players, which he doesn't, it doesn't make any difference if your SOS or Brad Scott.
MSU/Bama.....good for sly croom. and good for Nick Saban. people are going to immediatley say how did we lose to a team that got beat by MSU....i dont' know, but the timing of that game imo had a lot to do with it.......anyway....you have to look at the bama game as a fluke.....for bama. give us those turnovers....who knows.....but that's in the past....Go Dawgs....
Kansas/Ok St....wow. i can't wait to see the KS/MO game. the big 12 north has done a lot to redeem itself of late, and you have to prolific offenses with some actual star power up there....but i digress....KS is good, period. i don't know if they will go undefeated or not, but they're going to wind up with a10+ win season and likely a NYD bowl. but the bigger prize is there for them, and if they get there, i'm good with it. Rock Chock, Jahhawk.......KU....!!
Mich/Wisc...eh...i watched a lot of it, but Mich is not as good on D as they'd like to think. oh well, i hope they beat OSU next week.
VA/Miami....sad way for the OB to go out. the worst defeat/shut out at home every for the Canes. maybe a sign of the times.....but i'm sure that was not how the former players on hand Sat. night envisioned the OB going out.
VT/FSU....not real impressed either way. VT has a solid d, and the qb can make plays, and they have a solid RB....but they don't do anything great. which is why they can sneak up on anyone.
Clemson/WF...Clem is in unchartered waters...they control their own destiny....the TB factor though will likely come in to play...who knows, but beating WF was a lot bigger win than they would let on.
ND/AF.

lol:'nuf said.
and in the pac 10....Cal drops to 6-4. another team we have to look back on and say....what might have been.....
so, a little longer than usual, apologies....but i honestly am very happy for the team this weekend, that was a very impressive performance all together.
oh, and lastly, watched the UT/Temple game Fri....here's what stood out to me....Chris Lofton had 6 pts and we still won by 18. the depth on this team can be special, and unlike last year at times, i don't think we're going to have to rely on CL as much, which should free him up even more. I thought they looked pretty good, and the arena looked good on TV.
Good weekend folks!!! GO VOLS!!
