Well, what a weekend. every now and then the football gods throw us a bone on a weekend where on the surface things don't look too interesting, except for a couple of "name" match ups.

what lived up to expectations:
Cal/Oregon. hate to say it...but those are two good teams, either one could be a top 3 team in any league in the country. excellent game, heart breaker for the Ducks.

Notre Dame. continues to meet expectations. i for one am just ecstatic about the buffoon in the making that is Charlie Weiss. this is awesome.

Texas. I told you a couple of weeks ago TX was the most overrated team in the top ten, and they had only their schedule to thank for their lofty status. just call me "nostrajakus" i guess.:)

What exceeded expectations: Auburn. Colorado. Duke. Washington. the last two are on here for honorable mention for just making a game of it. neither were really supposed to do anything, yet both had their respective blue bloods on the ropes, late. as for Auburn and CO........way to go. made my weekend. maybe not so much for CO/OU, that was surprising, but for obvious reasons, WAR EAGLE!!!

South FL. very interesting. very impressed. this team as far as i'm concerned is top 10 material right now. that was a hell of an effort Friday night, and i was extremely impressed with how Jim Leavitt's team defended the indefensible. (likewise, i was impressed with Auburn's D against FL as well).

conference tilt......UGA got a tune up. big week this week for both GA and TN. both see the door open, and both know that Saturday is a MUST win for either to remain in contention. i read hat's thread earlier, and he is correct. the opportunity is there. go get it and GEAUX TIGERS, and, gulp, Go Wildcats? never thought i'd say that. I still expect TN to win this game. two weeks to prepare, at home, huge opportunity in front of us........no reason why we shouldn't go win this game.

South Carolina......nice win, closer for a little longer than most probably thought.

Bama......thanks. you lost to a pretty bad FSU team. i thought you guys would do better. but in their defense, Nick Saban said everyone needs to cool it with those expectations down there......maybe he's not so dumb after all?

Auburn: Thanks a bunch guys. appreciate it!:salute:

FL: maybe you should work on that whole penalty thing....i dunno, but 100+ yards a game in penalties is just not good.

and while i'm on the SEC, i think it's time we just admit something here.......the SEC is down this year. We have one really good team, LSU and one really good story, KY. then there's FL, GA, SC, BAma, Aub and TN, all right in around the same place. out of conference the league hasn't exactly lit it up either. we lost to Cal, Aub lost to S. FL, Ole MIss lost to MO. OUr biggest ooc win? KY over L'ville, and L'ville has proven to be a fraud. OK St? they lost to Troy. Maybe K. St. then...they did beat TX. anyway you slice it, the league, this year, isn't on top....

anyway, from what i've see so far this year, and it pains me to say it.....what i've seen on the West Coast this year has been the best football so far.

big winners this weekend: Ohio St and Wisconsin. If you didn't know better, you'd think the Big 10 was awesome this year.
South FL. haven't seen the polls yet, but they should be at or very near the top 10 this week.
Cal. setting up yet another "big" game with USC. for the first time in, i don't know how long, droski and his bunch control their own destiny after having leaped over the 1st two hurdles of the year.
the ACC. yes, it's still a mess, but the league got two huge OOC wins over #10 rutgers and the story that is Nick Saban and Alabama.
Tennessee. after 4 weeks of up and down, and bellyaching, we got to sit back and get an early Christmas Present, courtesy of Tommy Tubbervile. the door is now cracked, all we need to do is beat GA and root for LSU and KY, and the door comes crashing down.

what a weekend folks. this is why we all love college football.

I'm loving it. Texas and Oklahoma getting beat in the same weekend....lots of sour faces in the metroplex.

i for one was partial to the "shock and awe", and yes the tears, on the Gator fans' faces after losing to Auburn. that was priceless.

I have said all season that this is the craziest year of college football that i've ever seen, and I love it!

i still think the thing that impressed me the most was the way S. FL and Auburn defended the spread option attacks. both WVU and FL got held to season lows in points scored and neither team every looked like they got in to the rhythm they wanted to.

and probably most importantly, neither team panicked when WVU or FL got a big play......very sound, and should be reviewed by everyone on how to stop them.

They did it the same way that everyone should approach the spread. Don't let the QB beat you with his legs.

Yeah it was a great weekend. I was really impressed with that Auburn kicker, he did what Janikowski couldn't. Even though they lost that Major Wright kid is a head hunter and he sparked UF's comeback. Jermaine Taylor got knocked the F out by a guy he had beaten in the second round. And the most disappointing for me, after holding the lead for the enitre season, my beloved Mets folded in a unbelievable record setting fashion.

and it was two different methodolgies......correct me if i'm wrong here, but WVU relies on the edge with Pat White, so the defense has be good laterally, and be aware of the backside, wich S. FL did. with FL, Tebow is more of a threat up the middle, or at least tackle to tackle, so you have to be good in the center, which Auburn was.

where FL gets you on the edge is the reverses, and those rolling screen passes where everyone is moving when the ball is thrown, and Auburn did a good job with that as well.

also, both Auburn and S. FL tackeled very well in the open feild. they were both less concerned with the "hit", and more concerned with getting the ball carrier down.

I must say I was very impressed with Major Wright from FL, that's way to hit someone.

I think those are pretty accurate assessments. They also both forced the respective teams to play from behind. Just watching the Florida game, and their fans reaction to Tebow up the middle later in the game, I felt like they were getting a little tired of the Tebow show when it was less than effective.

QFT. i thought the exact same thing. i think at some point, the overwhelming feeling was that they needed to get Harvin the ball more down feild......

and playing from behind, also a good point. it was especially evident in the WVU Game. they looked confused on what to do when they HAD to throw the ball. it's one thing to run for 300+ when your up by 30. it's another to have to score 14 just to tie it up with limited time. plus WVU was real sloppy with the ball. and S. FL was just as sloppy in the first half......and WVU couldn't take advantage. Again, i credit both defenses for allowing both opportunites.......

Credit OhioVol for his assessment earlier in the year. You have to be aggressive, but the defense also has to hold their position, or "stay in their lanes".

yep. the overrunning of plays by the defense is, as we have seen twice this year, how you get beat very easily by that offense. it truly isn't a scheme you can just line up, rush straight up feild and make a play.

i for one am really looking forward to the LSU/FL game now. the other thing to consider is that UF's D has probably been exposed now. between what Ole Miss and Auburn were able to do against that D, i expect LSU to have a pretty good game plan.

and at the same time it was frustrating to see auburn run right at them, and gash them like they did. it makes me think "what might have been".:cray:

you said it when you pointed out that AU was strong up the middle, also let's give a blank check to the guy that teaches the AU players how to tackle, we need him.

i think as an Auburn fan, i would be very excited abou that win, but at the same time, extremely frustrated. keep in mind this is the same team that lost to MSU, at Jordan Hayer. they also lost to a better than expected S. FL.

either way, the defense for Auburn on Saturday night didn't resemble the D that took the feild in those two previous games.

but even with that said, the offense, and the running game specifically, really got going, and in the end was what did the damage.

keep in mind, that the TD drive that FL tied it up on was 89 yards, and took up like 5-6 minutes or something.....and it was a Tebow-led drive. If Auburn gets a stop on that drive i doubt it takes a g/w fg to win it.
