I haven't seen this spelled out so clearly until now. Not surprising but...

Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on Friday announced an “Emergency Economic Plan” that would give families a stimulus check of $1,000 each, funded in part by what his presidential campaign calls “windfall profits from Big Oil.”

The first part of Obama’s plan is an emergency energy rebate ($500 to individual workers, $1,000 to families) as soon as this fall.

“This rebate will be enough to offset the increased cost of gas for a working family over the next four months,” Obama said. “Or, if you live in a state where it gets very cold in the winter, it will be enough to cover the entire increase in your heating bills. Or you could use the rebate for any of your other bills or even to pay down debt

Amazing! Isn't this the guy that said (rightly) the gas tax holiday was a gimmick?

This does nothing to address the energy problem - it is simply a sock it to Big Oil plan that will be completely ineffective.

BS!

apparently barrack hasn't noticed that exxon and chevron stocks are down 10% a piece this year despite oil being up 30%. why doesn't he worry about apple's windfall profits? that Iphone sure is a ripofff.

yeah, but a lot of people actually thought the gas tax holiday would be a great idea. So take that idea and add the word rebate and the general public will probably love this!

The parts I really hate are the sob story reasons for it (home heating, gas prices) when I know if I get the check I'm going to buy an Xbox. But by Obama standards I'm rich so I don't need help and am part of the problem keeping the lower-class down.

so, he wants to tax the oil companies more and give it to us. wont the oil companies just pass that tax hike on to the consumers? i think they would correct?

Of course they will; just like all other corporate taxes get passed down the line . . . This is one of the dumbest vote grab gimmicks that I've ever seen.

Agreed, he should stick to his platform of Hope, Change and no details.

Exactly . . . I don't know why he is even worrying about being detailed about anything at this point given how well he is doing by not saying jack. A campaign devoid of specifics is better than a campaign full of stupid specifics.

It reminds me of the Allen/Webb campaign here in VA. Allen could have won going away by doing nothing more than show up. He opened his muoth and "Macaca" came out and he is now doing NFL pick em's on local sports radio.

wealth redistribution sucks for everybody except those getting something for nothing.

I am wondering how he plans to get this into effect by this fall. Besides the fact that oil companies will simple pass that on the the consumer and then some.

he doesn't. obama and the lib/dems are panicking about the whole fuel problem. they know that the majority of America want to drill. they're only recourse is to blame oil companies and try to tell Americans it isn't going to work. problem is that Americans don't believe them. if he can deflect it on big oil that's what he'll do. if he know anything acount economics 101, he knows they'll pass the tax on the consumer. but he and pelosi and reid don't care.

pelosi just doesn't get it. she talks about all the drilling we are doing in alaska, but she doesnt' understand that drilling is like 100 miles from the pipeline.

No need. Keeping your tires inflated properly will have the same effect as offshore drilling...:ermm:

Political Punch

Not touching on the offshore drilling thing, but it does list things that can be done to improve fuel efficiency. I have done most of these things and improved my fuel efficiency by something in the neighborhood of 15%

hell the article even states an estimate of how much oil per day we would save. If demand in this country went down by 800,000 barrels a day, how much would gas prices go down? Any ideas?
