Just replied to a thread but figured I'd just start my own to remind everybody...

When Dooley was offered the job, it was after multiple people turned down the Tennessee job. Stop *****ing about us hiring a "mediocre coach".

Fact is, nobody else wanted us and he did.

Dooley took just as big a risk in taking this job as we did hiring him. It amazes me as to how most people on here actually believed we could have hired a Gruden type coach with the shape this program was in. The depth chart, the senile fans, the pending sanctions, etc...

I'll agree with anybody, he hasn't proved squat on the field to make him a "legit" SEC coach yet. Give him time or GTFO.

This. If he flops here, he could very well never be a HC again. He took the risk of taking this job and I think we should all appreciate that.

It was an immediate upgrade in every aspect from La Tech - there was no risk for Dooley...let's be real

I agree with the op's sentiments but there seems to be some revisionist movement underway that wants everyone to believe that if we'd just offered a little more money we would've had a proven big name guy who could've brought in a trailer of 5* linemen and skill players.

You've got to be kidding... a no brainer? Not even close. Like Gator H8R said, he flops here and he very well may never be a HC again.

Sure he will. There are 70 other D1 schools that would love to have the former HC from Tennessee as their HC.

Anyway, he's not going to flop here and will be our HC for a long time.

Dooley is doing a great job! Considering the mess he came into. He has done a great job recruiting and evaluating talent. We have seen significant improvement from last year in so many phases...remember when we were 2 for 38 in 3rd down situations. Look at the improvement with Hunter, Da'Rick and Bray. Yes I know our running game is sucking right now but it will get better! Of that I have no doubt!

The problem is that some people had too high of expections this year...myself included..I predicted 8-4. We have to realize that we are still an extremely young team and we are just not quite there yet. But what Dooley has done with the disaster he walked into has been great.

We are poised for another great recruiting class and we will continue to get better. Just have to ignore the brats on here who have no patience and want everything right now!

Becoming a multi millonaire is always a no brainer. Especially when your wife is a doctor and you have a law degree to fall back on. His only risk was not ever being the head coach at a major school again.

The Guy coaching Fla said nobody could win at TN for at least 3 yrs and the fans will not wait that long. He seems to be right and I hate that Guy.

Zook got another HC job, Shula hasn't. So not completely a forgone conclusion either way.

Dooley is doing as good a job as can be expected under the conditions he was hired. My take though, if you go back and offer enough money you can get anyone you want. Our problem was MH did it the cheap way. Offer a well established head coach 5 to 6 mil and you'll get the big name you're asking for. Money talks.

The fact that "nobody wanted to come here" has more to do with the timing of it all than Tennessee as a coaching job. Tennessee is still a very sought after coaching job. It's just nobody wants to abandon their recruiting boards and start fresh 3 weeks before NSD.

Yet Fulmer is still unemployed. And he won a NC.

Those 70 haven't done much for Fulmer's job search.

Fulmer is in his 60s. Dooley is in his 40s. Big difference.

Plus, Fulmer definitely wouldn't take the necessary paycut, and was surely set in his ways after winning an NC.

These two are in much, much different situations.

You're right about that.

However, if we need to hire a coach after the 2012 or 2013 season, I'm pretty sure we'll be able to get a much more proven coach.

We got turned down because Hamobone was being a cheap ba$turd by SEC standards. Everyone needs to understand it wasn't our program that was turned down, it was the pay check for the work which had to be done.

Bama didn't turn tail and go to the next guy when Saban turned them down the first few times. They kept raising the stakes until he got an offer he couldn't refuse, and Bama got their man.

UT on the other hand got their 6th or 7th man depending on who you listen to around here. That is the only difference.

Truth is, we could fire Dooley this year and hire Saban next year if we were willing to out bid Bama. (Saban is now at $6 "milkion" according to reports, in comparison Dooley is at $2million just ahead of Joker at UK who comes in at $1.7 million, and behind every other coach in the league including Nutt. We don't know what Franklin is making at Vandy. I think $7-8 million might do the trick to get Saban here, but please stop making this a program thing, when it's a money thing. We have biggest stadium in the SEC, so we should be able to pay our coach the most money, and have the most proven coach. It really is that simple.

The fans have winning as their goal. Making money was Hamilton's goal, winning was secondary. From a fan's perspective, I'm glad he's gone.

And he could be a coach somewhere for a pretty nice six figure deal somewhere else.

Go out there with a $2 million offer again, and we will get the same results.

So Brady Hoke would not come here for millions? He left for Michigan to take on that mess the next year. Skip Holtz took the South Florida when TN hired Dooley. Two guys that turned around two programs!

But if you wave 10 million in front of Gruden, and tell him to pay his assistants from that money and he can keep the rest, he'd be here tomorrow IMO.

I agree, this is about money. We should be able to out bid anyone in the SEC, and almost everyone else in the country.
