We need to hire David Blackburn

Dave Hart doesn't give a sh*t about UT athletics. He's on his way out and we have the chance to hit a home run and we're dicking around.

If you are hoping we hire him ASAP because you want a new coaching search don't hold your breath. From what I have read, him and Butch are pretty close.

Suspect this gets merged with 14 other identical threads. :)

If i hired a new coach i would go to Louisville and not leave until Bobby P. is on the plane headed back to Knoxville.

Butch is here to stay for awhile imo, and I'm ok with it, if he hires a lights out offensive coordinator...adjustments are non-existent game plan is amateur..

This is the million dollar question. Does Butch "tweak" his system and get fired next year, or does he see its/his offensive deficiencies and hire an offensive genius to run the show?

On topic, if Blackburn will come in and go after a Harbaugh/Meyer/Saban type hire, bring him on.

It's silly to think that's gonna happen. There's several threads about it, and I guarantee BP will not be coming here. It's as silly as the gruden stuff.

LSU tried to talk to Bobby P and he said he wants to be faithful to Louisville because they gave him a chance after the Arkansas debacle and he is grateful to them.

You are right -- UT would have to pay for Petrinos buyout at Louisville

I do not have exact statistics but I would say that there are only about 12 hall of fame college coaches out there.
Most are already established at their current program. Some are at lesser programs, such as Herman at Houston, but he probably has a short list of jobs that he wants. I would bet that Tennessee is not on that list.
SO, which one of those 12 coaches will come to U.T.?

Last time around, we reached out to Boise's former coach, Gruden, Cowher, Lovie Smith, Muschamp, Gary Patterson, Butch Davis, A & M current coach, etc. etc. and none of them wanted the job.

U.T. is a destination job for us but to others out side of the fan base it is not a good job.
Others don't see U.T. as we see it.

So many on here just don't realize this.

Butch needs to grow some and find a new strength and conditioning coach and a premier offensive coordinator if he wants to be at Tennessee. He has a 1/2 roster playing and Debord is very inconsistent as an OC. If not then Blackburn needs to do what is best for his alma mater.

Okay, fair point that UT fans see the job as the Holy Grail, other non-fans do not.

That said, my understanding (which could be wrong) is that your bolded statement is only partially true, and doesn't tell the entire story. For example, Gruden, Cowher, and Smith were unrealistic, period. Patterson and Muschamp apparently just didn't want it - it is what it is. However, I believe Sumlin actually wanted the job and we chose to go a different direction.

Two other variables: money and roster. If we are willing to spend the money on the hire, which we've not been willing to do historically, an excellent coach will take the job. Secondly, our talent level is vastly different than what it was when Dooley and Butch were hired. Can you imagine what Petrino could do with Guarantano, Byrd, Malone, Jennings, etc...?

I'll concede that we're not nationally a job like Texas, USC, Notre Dame, etc... but the administration could have done/could do a hell of a lot more than they have to lure a top coach.

The best possible and most reasonable hire if we're willing to spend the money right now, I would say is Chip Kelly. He's not doing well right now in the NFL, reports have indicated that he wants back into CFB, and we have a favorable roster for him to be successful here. He's also proven to be a great college coach, who's capable of competing for championships. Petrino's buyout is simply too high right now, but if we wait til it's up we definetly have a shot with him too. Those two are definetly the top tier of possible coaches. The next tier is Tom Herman, Kyle Whittingham, Craig Bohl, Art Briles.
If we try to get anyone below the level of these guys it would be a complete failure.
