WTF... is this "uncle" his press secretary?! Sounds to me like he's surrounded by some real winners if they approve of disclosing Hurds personal information..or really smart all along to blame someone else when he rolls out to the Division 2 promise land. If this joker is so dang good then he will go division one and ball out like all i formation fullbacks do...,ridiculous... wait...who needs a 6'4" running back in their roster who can smoke a treadmill?

Most of us knew Hurd would be better in the I/Power formation with Oline lined up with their hand in the dirt ready to drive defenses back.

Unfortunately, Butch does not adapt to his players like he said he would early on. He is hell bent on running his system regardless of the personnel he has.

He does not have the ability to adapt like Kiffin does. Say what you will about Lane, but he knew how to get the most out of his offense. This is something Butch will probably never be able to do.

I like Butch and he has really done some great things for Tennessee. We now may need someone else to take us the rest of the way.

His uncle should have told him not to quit mid-season instead of defending him. If he wanted to transfer at the end of the season, fine, but quitting on his teammates is some crybaby crap.

Don't think for a second that NFL scouts aren't taking notes. If/when he makes it to the combine, it will be the first thing he gets asked about. It will overshadow all his accomplishments. It probably cost him some pretty serious cheese too as no team wants a quitter.

I wonder if he's more injured then we know. Yes, i understand they say he could have played the second half of the USCjr game. Something is not right , hope it gets fixed ASAP. Hurd has given his all to this point. I for one wish him the best, hope to see him in the league one day. I also hope the Vols fix things, win out and make a good bowl game! Go Vols, Go Hurd, I will always be a fan of both>

Solid post. Butch's unwillingness to change and adapt will be his downfall. It doesn't make you less of a coach or a person to admit you're wrong and it's not working, that's the smart thing to do.

Whoever is advising this kid is absolute trouble. Jalen gains nothing, but loses a lot, by not finishing the season.

He could talk to the coaches behind the scenes, discuss moving out to WR or TE some, gone on "medical reserve" so to speak (lay out under the cover of injury - believe me it happens sometimes), whatever, there are only 4 regular season games left anyway. he could suck it up, finish the season, maybe get the record but at least get really close, then announce the transfer in the off-season. If that happened, he would have maintained his relationship with the fan base, maintained the respect of his team and coaches, made it easier to transfer somewhere else, any number of positives.

If you've lost the eligibility anyway, why leave now?
If you're this close to a very reachable record that would make you a LEGEND, why leave now?
If care about your teammates and school at all, and there's any chance that you can help them in any way, why leave now?

Instead, he is tagged as a quitter for walking out on his teammates (supposedly his family, brothers, so on) in the middle of a season for selfish personal reasons. He has still lost this year's eligibility, and now he'll be forced to sit out a year unless he goes FCS D2 or JUCO.

If, as Vol74 wrote, Jalen is taking a beating at RB so he wants to protect his ability to have a long NFL career someday by switching to WR/TE, then why not make that switch here first and finish the season? And who is telling these kids that you won't take a beating playing WR or TE in the NFL?!?! Every play for a WR or TE is a concussion risk in that league.

Bottom line, the excuses and spinning can't cover the fact that this whole thing is monumentally selfish and downright idiotic. Bad decision that will not only impact Jalen, but will also all the (former) teammates, coaches, etc who were counting on him.

If he doesn't want to get beat up, then he should consider a new sport.

His advisors are idiots

"He wants to play in the NFL", so we advised him to do something that will raise flags to every NFL team. Smart

There's one freaking month left in the season. Advising him to quit at this point is 100% boneheaded.

Staying may have cost him his body and any potential NFL career at ANY position. He is taking a beating because he is NOT suited for this offense. He makes contact behind the LOS like 70% of his touches. I don't blame him for leaving, at all.

That isn't his uncle, that is his dad making sure to stir up chit in knoxville so jalen would transfer closer to him.

It worked and time to move on.

Butch is a one-dimensional coach with multi-dimensional players. I have no idea how he goes about recruiting...they say he is an excellent recruiter...but he doesn't seem to recruit the right people for his system. He reels in the people with lots of stars by their names but they don't turn out to be the people he needs. Jalen was a great back but CBJ wasted his talents. I feel for Jalen and blame Jones. Recruitment just got a lot harder for coach.
