We need to come out and punch the sooners in the mouth and shut-up this stadium early on.

The Oklahoma players have already made it clear they feel a responsibility to back up Stoops' talk about the SEC. If we can strike early and make them scared, I really like our young team in an underdog upset role with nothing to lose.

I don't predict we'll win, but we have enough playmakers on both sides of the ball to shock the world.

Our defense is going to have to keep us in this one. If we win it's because it's a low-scoring game. The Orange Swarm has to suffocate them, then we have a chance.

Idk if you're gonna scare them, even if you do get an early lead. It will come down to the pressure on them and executing if they fall behind.

I generally agree that we can't win a shootout, but I like the potential of our offense.

I don't think we've seen everything they can do quite yet...

Because that worked so well for Arkansas State?

It made the game closer than it would have been.

The OP is right for a number of reasons. Many of UT's players have never played a road game... and their baptism is Norman?!?!

Early success would be a huge confidence builder. Anything to quieten their fans is helpful. Anything that gives their players any doubts... helps.

OTOH, if OU comes out and immediately smacks UT, the young guys might wilt.

That worked so well against Oregon

In all seriousness if we can score first then our chances greatly improve. It feels like OK has been prone to lay eggs against lesser competition in every season. They do have the ability to blow us out though so this game can go one way or the other

Unfortunately no. They managed to squeak out a win in the last 3 1/2 quarters of the game.

Oh no. Well, I just assumed the Vols went on to win every game the rest of the season as well, so at least I still have that to hang on to.

It will only work if an offense can sustain drives and actually tire a defense out. ASU was something like 2-12 on 3rd down conversions. I don't care how fast your offensive tempo is, if it's 3 plays and punt you aren't going to be able to tire out a squad full of sumo wrestlers.

It will be a hostile environment - the key to victory will be preventing big, momentum changing plays in all phases of the game. If Oklahoma wrestles away the momentum it will be difficult to get it back in our favor.

1) Sustained drives - we don't have to score a buncha points but we need to keep their offense off the field and keep the crowd tempered by minimizing 3-outs. We'll definitely face key 3rd downs and we need to capitalize on those 2/3 of the time to prevent back breaking momentum shifts.

2) Red zone D - Ideally they never get in the red zone, but it's going to happen. We need to turn their TDs into FGs as often as possible.

3) Turnovers - gotta win the turnover battle. Most likely we'll need a key turnover and to capitalize on it (offensively) at some point in the game. Absolutely HAVE TO protect the football and not turn it over ourselves.

4) Field position (special teams) - field position will be critical. If you look back on our victory over SC last year, our punting game put SC's offense in impossible situations. We have to bring that to Norman. We have to cover the kicks and we have to kick great - every time.

Well, the offense is going to have to sustain long drives and eat clock

This will give our D time to stay rested and give us a chance late in the game

If we go 3 and out on too many drives, our D will be gassed and we are finished

My thoughts exactly

If you look at the first two games as indicators - your points #2-4 look promising.

I'm worried about sustained drives though with our offensive line. I think they are going to have to setup the run with the passing game, which is obviously not ideal and putting a lot on Worley's shoulders.

Point #1 is the key. Unfortunately, the Vols don't have an effective running game and they play a hurry up offense which will not run much time off the clock.

OU is a terrible match up for the Vols.

If I'm Oklahoma's DC, I want to take away the short passes and force the offense to throw the deep ball (which we haven't shown we can do) or run (which also has been thus far mediocre).

This worries the hell out of me. We can't go 3-out on 2/3 of our possessions in 2 minutes. We need long sustained drives, even if we don't always score - both to maintain momentum and rest our D.

Arkansas State this team?

How about Tennessee this team?

How about following Neyland's maxims? Take the fight to them for 60 minutes and all that.

Some of y'all post like a bunch of Gators.

I just think this team might just be young enough to think they can win and I hope they have the talent to back it up.
