I watched the game with Florida two times.

I agree with others that we sorta beat ourselves with mistakes. I would like to add though we had no turnovers on that hostile environment. Rather commendable I think.

But to me the biggest reason the Vols lost was, simply and directly, Florida had better players, across the board, than we do. At almost all positions they had "Mo Better" athletes than us. We have some good players, but not as many than them.

Recruiting HAS to improve.

The only way recruiting is going to significantly improve is by winning but unfortunately it's a cycle that we can't seem to break

I don't know. If only there were some clue contained in the post. Like something with Capital Letters....alas, it is a mystery.

I saw that, just wanted to make sure McDad Bagmen Incorporated wasn't a front for something else....

We can recruit just fine players do wanna come here. We just need coach's that can close the deal and we will be good. We are down 26 players and thats not gonna be easy to make up. It will take 3 years to make that up and that's with out the looming punishment from the NCAA.

SO frustrating - we had 4 and 5 star rosters absolutely loaded with talent with Jones and Pruitt, but lacked the directional talent and culture to develop into winners.

Now we have the leadership (so it appears) but now lack that roster depth and talent due to the aforementioned coaches' mishandling of the operation.

We can’t recruit because every team we recruit against is making up anything they want about our impending punishment because we don’t have an actual punishment from the NCAA.

What’s happening right now is probably actually worse than the punishment.

We Have Got To Win.

All dickish jokes aside. Heupel is going to have to KILL the transfer portal the first few years to be competitive, imo.

We all hate Mullen, but he kills it in the portal. Heupe will have to do the same. Think of it like this...would you rather have an incoming 3* or a transfer from OSU, Bama, Clemson, OK, etc.?

I understand a lot of people will choose the high school recruit due to the fact he will be here 4 years, but I’m talking about what’s best right now, and I firmly believe taking more in the portal (if possible) is the best route to immediate success.

Are you taking Brian Grant or the 2nd string from potentially one of the top teams? (I’m in no way disrespecting Grant, I’m sure he will be fine after a few years)

Do we really “have” to improve recruiting?

Really?

How has that been working out?

Heupel needs to simply put in a system that works. Get his kids to the point they can be competent in that system…….keep developing from there.

The more development the players get the more reliable they become and the less “incompetence” we will see on the field.

If these things happen, Tennessee will improve, Tennessee will win, and recruits will come……..the kind of recruits Heupel wants…….thus…….rolling the ball bigger and bigger.

It’s never simply “recruits”

You got to have a scheme that works, and you got to develop what you have.

Generally speaking you can't win without recruiting good players, and you can't recruit good players unless you are winning. It's tough to break out of that cycle. Hopefully we can start playing at our maximum capability (eliminate penalties, dropped passes, bad decisions, etc) and win the games that we should (S Car, Mizzou, KY, etc.) and get back to winning 7 or 8 games per year. If we do that, maybe the elite players will start coming back slowly until we can field a team that can give AL & GA some competition on the field. The jury is still out on Heupel, but he has to have 2 or 3 years, at a minimum, to see if he is the answer. I sure hope so, because another coaching change and five year transition period is the last thing we need.

Recruiting is the obvious answer. The problem is the damn stupid rule the NCAA is going to pass that will allow teams to take up to an additional 7 players due to players leaving via the transfer portal. All that means is Smart, Saban, Dabo, et. al. will sign 32 from now on and continue to stockpile talent. Rich get richer.

True. IMO, it has to start with the portal and hopefully the rules will change to help that. UT needs guys that are known commodities. The good things coming out from players will help attract those guys.

I honestly do not think HS recruiting improves much until UT proves they can win. IMHO, that means 7 or 8 wins THIS YEAR.... something better than expected that can be sold to HS players.
