These have been a rough few years for Tennessee fans. We have watched as our football program has slowly deteriorated. But one thing that has remained the same is we are different from other schools in one meaningful way. Like all SEC programs we love our football and we want to win but we do so with class.
I now live in Atlanta, GA and have often discussed football with other colleagues and friends. When I bring up going to a UGA game or Alabama game they always comment on how it is not safe to wear the wrong clothes. I hear stories of vandalism and violence. And I think in all my years going to UT games I do not remember every even seeing that kind of stuff. Not to say it does not occur but not with the frequency at other SEC schools. This last week was a grim reminder of that at the LSU-Alabama game, where ignorance lead to murder and loss of life.
Instead, I remember good sported fun with UGA fans and the like. I remember seeing some UT fans concerned when they saw opposing fans too drunk to drive and offering assistance. I remember the friendly waves driving a boat to the game.
So why bring this up now? The new coach will be in charge of Tennessee's first born son. His face will be on National TV and his words heard across the country. When people in California think about Tennessee they will think about our football coach. And more importantly when our children watch games they will get an image of our coach as an example of leadership and normality. So right now we have one of the best things going in the atmosphere at Neyland on gameday. I can bring friends from anywhere and feel proud.
Many here do not feel we have the luxury to feel entitled to a Big Name coach that we must settle for what we can get. Again we are Tennessee. We should not settle for whatever we can get. A coach who is maybe less than classy on the sideline because we feel he can make us a winner again. Or a coach who betrays all for the highest bidder. No sir, WE ARE TENNESSEE. And this hire is not just to protect our ability to put Ws on the board but protect a way of life.
Maybe I am alone but whatever the financial cost we deserve the best and the best we should have.
