Least/most penalized SEC football teams

This chart is for last season, not 2024. But this year, we’re still committing almost 8 penalties per game. Inexcusable.

To me, this is a hugely disappointing stat. I think we are one of the most undisciplined Tennessee teams I’ve ever seen.

Still not enough people running steps until they puke, not enough people being benched, as I see it.

Look at the top 10 teams in the country in terms of least penalties.

Then tell me which one of those you’d trade records with?

I don't understand why our defense lines up off sides on almost every single play. Moving back an extra foot when lining up would probably save us at least 2 penalties a game.
That drives me crazy. You can see it on TV. I played DL in high school (granted that was eons ago). It’s really easy to stay on sides

Are you serious? SMDH

100%. Which team would you like to change records with?

This stat has no correlation with winning. There will be more playoff teams in the top ten most penalized than in the top ten least penalized.

You’re worried about something that doesn’t matter

CJH teams have always had a reputation with heavy penalties but this year more then ever I anticipate a flag everytime we make a big gain and it’s a drive killer.

Was coach Golesh the “bad cop,” that kept everyone in line? How can we get more disciplined?

We gotta clean up the penalties bc we are a great team that doesn’t need to injure ourselves with stupid penalties. Look how well we have done despite being undisciplined. Sky is the limit!

GBO!

Maybe when Campell is replaced (I do appreciate him battling thru injuries and giving his all) and Heard isn't a FR, you will see the penalties cut in half.

It’s been happening all year. I don’t see it stopping now. How many defensive offsides again? The bad thing is that so many of these should be easy to correct.

Penalties for the Vols have killed drives and on D they've aided other team drives. Every team goes through this to a certain extent, just seems like we get those off the wall penalties (receiver not covered like Bama) that took away a 30 yard gain for us and killed a drive earlier this year Arky game and Bama lost a TD. Those may have been legit but they seem to come at opportune times to control scoring , as I put my conspiracy hat on🤣.

So many dead ball fouls, penalties erasing big offensive plays, drive-stopping penalties.

Discipline is an issue. I question if players are taught to own up for “mistakes” and to take responsibility to fix.

Sometimes the difference in winning and losing are untimely penalties. We've been able to overcome them in nine wins, but I'd have to look back each penalty in the two losses.

Doesn't matter? Are you kidding me? One big reason we are sitting here at 9-2 instead of 10-1 is because of that stupid roughing the punter penalty we committed against Arkansas! That changed the complexion of the game completely! We likely win if we do not commit that penalty!

This is a problem but we also get called for OL holding penalties at a disproportionate rate than our opponents. I think this has already been documented here on the board earlier this year. You can pretty much book a holding call if it's a pass play and Nico scrambles. It's almost a guarantee they will call a hold if Nico gets outside the tackle box yet Pearce and Co. can chase down QB's all day and the refs hardly call holding on our opponents in the same situation. I genuinely don't know what can be done about this.

It's gotten so bad, everytime we complete a pass downfield I am automatically looking for the flag. It has become an involuntary reaction by me.

Doesn’t matter and no, I’m not kidding you. If our DBs never got hands on and rerouted WRs, we’d be less penalized. Would that actually help us or hurt us? It would hurt us.

Heupel has always had highly penalized teams. Not sure its that big a deal to him if he is getting the offensive / defensive efficiency he desires. He has sure not done anything to improve it.
