Everything indicates this. UT will be 8-4 or 9-3 most years and be ranked 10-20th. Historically all time we are 9th (using AP poll). In modern football 80s-current we are 14th all time. I'm not defending Butch, he should have beat 2 of the 4 teams we lost to off of talent alone, but thinking that 8 wins next season does anything but grant him a contract extension is dilusional.

If we were ranked 9-12, we would have 2 losses, in the SEC champ game and possibly looking at an outside shot at the playoffs...

I would have to agree with the OP... In good years, we should expect 10-2 and in bad years we should expect 6-6. That leaves 8-4 in the middle... It hurts to admit that 2016 is who we are... but that's who we are.

Identity reflects attitude. Alabama was garbage for some years winning less than 5 games a year. We never will accept mediocrity.

As long as bama is permanent on schedule, you're probably right. If UT didn't have Bama this year, it could have arguably gone undefeated had it not been for injuries.

So historically saying, we, as Vol fans, should settle for less?

And this attitude.... is exactly how you get a 2nd tier, also ran program.... at best. A 6-6 record should NEVER be good enough at UT. The floor should be 8-4.

Less? We will be ranked top 20 (modern football 80s- current were 14th) that's including some of our best years. Alabama is historically a top 5 school, "like it or not they just are, even with the Shula years. All time we have around a 63% win percentage, with a bowl win that puts us at 9 of 13 games being wins which is 69% which as a program is what we should expect.

That's just it. We are a 2nd tier program. Your top tier guys are the michigans, OSUs, Oklahomas, Alabamas. If you want to pretend we're in that group then you'll be hard pressed to ever be satisfied with our coach.

Butch Jones has turned you guys into expecting mediocrity.

No, Dooley and Kiffen have made us realize mediocrity beats the heck out of just plain bad. And we still hope for, and expect improvement, we just have a bit more patience.

2nd tier programs at least occasionally win their division in their conference. We don't.

Keep in mind we had the most talented roster butch will ever have this year...

We were 10-2 our Championship year in 98 without a couple of miracle, improberable comebacks that we lucked into.

2nd tier programs should still be competing for championships when their division sucks and they have the oldest, most talented team, with experience on both lines and a senior QB.

I don't think that any big time program settles for mediocrity. Alabama never has settled for mediocrity, but they were in the wilderness for years because they couldn't find a coach. It certainly wasn't for a lack of trying.
