Was The Coaching Search Debacle Last Week Really That Big of A Deal?

As the title says, was this coaching search debacle last week really that big of a deal? Sure, it might negatively impact the 2018 recruiting class, but if that means getting the right coach for the job, none of this will matter.

I don't care about what the MSM talking heads are saying or how they are trying to play this up as some "big" deal. There are many, MANY worse things that can happen to a program other than a bungled coaching search. Look at Ole Miss for example. Scandalous things happened there, and they now have players leaving right and left. The situation down there is dire.

Ignore the idiots like Finebaum, Herbstreit, or any of the MSM piranhas constantly piling on Tennessee.

We're going to be just fine.

Only if you care about the short term (3-5 years) future of Tennessee football.

Otherwise, meaningless

Yep. It's unprecedented. You could make a good movie out of this ****.

Also gonna suck to hear the commentators talk about it during every game for who knows how many years. They'll go through our coaches in the last 10 years. Fulmer, Kiffin, Dooley, Butch and _______. Then they'll run through the Currie debacle, and they'll probably list all the coaches that turned us down.

It couldn’t get much worse than where we were dude. If it’s painful in the short term but we exorcised our demons for the long run it’s worth it

Yes. It was that big of a deal. It exposed a lot and set Tennessee back a mile.

Well, we were going to have Mike Leach be our football coach, and not have to pay someone 5 million dollars not to work.

Now, we will hire Kevin Steele, and be out of 5 million. So yes. Yes, this whole thing is a damn mess.

In the short-term - yes: longer-term - no:

The slow action and knee-jerk reactions reeked of desperation. The outward appearance of the coaching search was poorly organized and executed. Frankly, this was a jovial, 'break the ice' topic on several of my meetings, which is a reflection of the university. This reflection is parlayed into numerous coaching rejections (dumpster fire) and recruiting issues.

The best response was to take the reigns, restart, and control the information to the public. I cannot say if P Fulmer is the right choice at AD, but he does add instant credibility and control. However, the recruiting trail will likely take hits until we get the top three roles managed (HC - DC/OC).

Look at the Penn State scandal and how well they're doing today (5 years later). To me, this is not even on the same plane of existence as what was going on there and they've recovered.

If Penn State can recover from that horrible mess, I know we can too and quickly.

No, it wasn't. It just hurt yankee ESPN's feelings that we didn't suck up to a Penn State/Ohio State guy. The nerve!

Getting a new coach is always a PROCESS. It just seems like our's has been more public than most of them are, usually all behind closed doors until it is signed in ink.

Penn state cleaned house. We still have a lot in house that contribute to the problem. And they still went through another coaching search.

They also went thru 2 coaches to get there. Am tired of ignorant people affecting other people's joy of UT sports.

It wasn’t life or death, so no. But it effected me financially... I now have more discretionary as I’m not donating to UT.

Well I feel comfortable saying that we could have hired Leech Brohm Kiffin or Gruden but they messed,it up. Should the new not put together a winning program like Leech Brohm Gruden or Kiffin then YES it does matter
If that be the case then by messing things up last week we were prevented from hiring a coach who will advance the program
If you accidently hit me in the head and the injury is small then no harm no foul but if I die from it then it is. A big deal
