Was Currie fired for trying to get us a good coach?

Currie wanted Schiano from the start and made no real effort to find a coach until that blew up in his face. He was a Haslam Guy.

No one expected Gundy to take the job but they called him anyway and he used Tennnessee for another raise.

They tried with Brohm but perhaps the Schiano stuff scared him away or there is truth to UT not wanting to pay his $5 million buyout.

They tried with Morris but he was always interested in TAMU and it seems he even preferred Arky to UT.

Who else is out there that would come here? Petersen was interviewed but why would he leave Washington?

Everyone wants Kiffin back but a lot of people, especially some boosters, are still upset about how he left UT.

Then there is Leach and a MOU he worked out with Currie. Perhaps Fulmer doesn’t think they can work together or that he is not worth the money. Maybe Fulmer thinks hiring a strong DC, like Kirby Smart, will work instead of paying huge money to top coach, like Jimbo.

I don’t know what is going on in the AD’s office but that needs to be fixed before Tennessee will get a top coach.

At this point, maybe they take a chance with Pruitt. Maybe his competitiveness will rub off on the team. Maybe he will instill some discipline and be honest with these kids.

If anything, Pruitt will recruit well and maybe he builds a solid staff. Maybe in the meantime, Fulmer can clean up the AD’s office that was wrecked by Hamilton and Hart.

All we can do is trust Fulmer and at least give the new coach a chance. Maybe Pruitt will become a coaching star.

If this doesn’t work, Fulmer needs to step down and UT needs to spend a lot of money and give total control of football operations to an established coach.

Outsider's take:

Currie was brought in by Haslim

Currie Played the good soldier and worked the Schiano deal as instructed.

You guys rebelled, and he knew he had to make a good (splash) hire regardless of his orders from Haslim.

He thought he had his guy in Gundy, but your president quashed the deal.

In desperation, he tries to get Leach but he gets cut down at the knees.

Think about it, he rolls out with Schiano and everyone in the school seemed ok with it til the fans reacted. He then goes after Gundy and what if this is where Phil sabotaged it. He then toyed with the names given to him but instead went for Brohm.?Again the school shuts him down. Then the talk doeren and Morris and he instead goes for Leach. The school puts the final shut down on him and bring in Phil to get the cheap hire to keep costs low to maximize profits

Just my theory after the crap names Phil was talking to and how no decent names were even mentioned as serious candidates

Didn't he take a Tennessee jet to interview for another job? Just can't please everyone. I say get behind Phil and what's he's doing or move out of the way. Go Vols!!

I don't think very many in the AD were "fine" with Schiano. Seems more likely they were the first to react when the news Currie was in the air dropped.

Interesting, fired Tennessee athletic director John Currie attended the Hallof Fame ceremony last night in New York in which Peyton Manning was inducted.

Looks like Currie was a scapegoat termination based on recent events. Something to keep the fans distracted long enough to bag a bargain bin coach.

Of course he was.

The idea that Currie was some Machivellian villain out freelancing the coaching search in the face of the rest of the AD's better judgment just isn't plausible.

I absolutely believe they decided to go cheap again, who in their right minds turns down 7 to 10 million a year?

^This

I do not believe for one second that we legitimately offered Gundy 7.5 million. If we did, he would have been a fool not to take it. I don't think it was a real offer. It was all for show. Gundy even came out and said that the meeting wasn't that serious.

John Currie was getting fired after the Schiano debacle regardless of who he hired. The only reason he wasn't fired immediately is because the school didn't want to look completely incompetent. He was fired because they believe they have reason to fire with cause.

Grundy said he never had serious talks with Tennessee in the media blew it out of proportion.

Exactly. Currie never really had any serious talks with anyone. He only gave Brohm a brief phone call. Some think he had Leach coming here? Lol. Was never gonna happen (thank God).

It was Schiano or bust for Currie.

More and more everyday it looks like Currie was the scapegoat. Sadly I'm believe Phil only wants UT to be successful if he's involved in that success. He's still salty about 08'.

I don’t trust Fulmer, period. And I can see where other coaches might have an issue him also.
