Yeah, I know that sounds like a strange topic amongst Kiffin and coaching carousel threads, but hear me out and I'll try to keep the story short..

Carl Pickens and I are from the same hometown, Murphy, North Carolina. He played for the Murphy High School Bulldogs before having such great success at Tennessee and in the NFL. Though I've never met him, we "communicated" several years ago. You see, my mother worked with his mother at an assembly plant. I have always had a skill of drawing so I would draw pictures of Carl and send them to him through our mothers. In return, he would send me autographed trading cards and even a personalized autographed football that he bought for me.
This year Murphy's football team finally had a winning year and a young man on the team beat Carl's school record for touchdown catches. I was having a discussion with someone about this and he said that he was glad the boy beat Carl's record because, and I quote, "He's alot nicer than Carl." I found this strange because, even though I've never met him face to face, sending me autographed items including a ball he bought with his own money seemed very friendly.
It's something thats been weighing on my mind for a week now and I was just wanting to know if their was anyone on here that has met Carl or maybe worked at Tennessee during his time there could straighten this out for me and tell me if Carl is a nice person.

Thanks.

Clever.

At least it was consistent with everything else you post....just a bunch of short, semi-coherent, 1-syllable words.

Like I sit up at night reading your posts for their thoughtful commentary and expert analysis. Apparently you like jokes, as long as they aren't directed at you. Figures.

I like jokes. My problem with your joke wasn't that it was directed at me...it was that it wasn't funny.

You should be thanking us. If it weren't for me and okievol, we'd all be sitting around talkin' about how nice Carl Pickens is.

Yeah, your right, I'm sorry. Carry on.

CP is a good guy, I used to train with him in the late 90's. I haven't seen him for years though. Unfortunetly, Pro athletes can't take the time to communicate with everyone. People should understand this and not judge pro athletes on random interactions.

Carl and my dad are pretty good friends. He lives in Georgia now and is a really nice guy. Him and Fulmer left on nonspeaking terms and thats why he isn't around much..

i haven't spoke to him since he left ut but i met carl in 1991 while visiting a friend of mine, that was a freshman on the team, and carl was a great guy. we actually got into a wrestling match. he wasn't arrogant like i have heard others say. carl and the other players were actually joking alot that night about funny things that had happened during a recent road game. great memories.

CP got a bad rap in college. I am not saying he is a bad person, I was always a fan of his, but I can tell you about a few times I was around campus while he was playing at UT.

My football coach coached Andy Kelly, so we got to make several trips to the UT campus. We were young and every player we met we always tried to get autographs from them. We saw CP across the road and someone tried to speak to him, he either didn't hear or just kept walking. The lady that was showing us around campus said, "Carl has been pestered so much, if he sees people wanting autographs he will walk the other way."

My coach took several players to the UT/Temple game, not sure on the year '90/'91?, and we got to go into the locker room and meet a lot of the team. I think I got about 10 to 20 autographs from players. All were nice and were really willing to talk to us. I was getting Tony Thompson's autograph and several players called to CP to come sign one of my cards. He just waved his hand downward as he walked the other way out of the locker room.

Neither of these stories really changed my opinion of him. I was young and meeting "famous" football stars was supposed to be hard. But to older fans I could see why he was villainized. I have heard much more stories of him. I won't repeat those stories because i cannot verify them.

I used to watch him from the stands. He never really spoke to me though. Still not heard from him.

I once stopped at a gas station in Murphy. There was a plaque on the wall from their 1988 state championship team. I asked the gas station attendant if he knew Carl Pickens. He said his sister went to school with him and that he was "the cockiest sonofagun on the planet."

Take it for what its worth.

P.S. Temple was in 1990

I can't speak to whether or not he was nice (although I remember him having a reputation of not being the friendliest person), however he was and incredible player. One of the all time greats here.
