Need to Know
  • Tennessee posted its fourth straight shutout on Tuesday with an 18-0 win over Northern Kentucky, marking the first time in program history that the Vols have shut out four opponents in a row.
  • UT's pitching staff has been downright dominant, holding opposing hitters to a .118 batting average while averaging 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings. The staff also ranks ninth in the country in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.40).
  • The Big Orange are the only team in the nation that has not allowed a run this season. Dating back to last year, UT has not allowed a run in its last 37.2 innings pitched.
  • With last weekend's opening-series sweep over Appalachian State, the 2019 Vols became the first team in program history to record a three-game series sweep without allowing a run and just the third squad to post three straight shutouts in a season, joining the 1965 and 1916 teams.
  • UT's pitching staff was dominant against the Mountaineers. Eight total pitchers saw action and held App State to nine total hits while combining for 32 strikeouts over the weekend.
  • Junior RHP Garrett Stallings shined in his first-career Friday-night start, giving up just one hit in seven scoreless innings while setting a career high with eight strikeouts.
  • Sophomore LHP Garrett Crochet was unhittable in his lone appearance out of the bullpen last weekend, setting a career high with nine strikeouts in just four innings. The Ocean Springs, Miss., native retired all 12 batters he faced and picked up his first save of the season.
  • UT is the only Power 5 conference program to return every pitcher that recorded a win last season.
  • Tennessee's 18 runs on Tuesday were its most since defeating Austin Peay, 18-4, on March 15, 2017.
  • Junior first baseman Luc Lipcius is off to a red-hot start at the plate after posting a monster performance at the plate on Tuesday afternoon. Lipcius set or tied career highs with three hits, two runs, a homer and five RBIs while also recording his first-career triple. Through four games, Lipcius leads the team with a .500 batting average, six hits, two doubles and six RBI.
  • Five true freshmen made their Tennessee debuts on Tuesday night against Northern Kentucky: OF Christian Scott, INF Austin Knight, INF Trey Lipscomb, RHP Camden Sewell and RHP Tanner Kohlhepp. In total, nine true freshmen have already seen action for the Vols this season.

  • The Hoosiers are led by new head coach Jeff Mercer, who is replacing Chris Lemonis, who is now the head coach at Mississippi State.
  • Indiana has proven to be the premier program in the Big 10 in recent years, advancing to the NCAA tournament in five of the last six seasons.
