Well the Navy doesn’t . Which is why these uniforms were chosen to honor the VF-17 Jolly Roger Squadron from WWII.Imo, the Navy helmet is just wrong. Pirates were deserters, who prayed on the defenseless merchant ships. They murdered people for personal gain. They were sea-going thieves and homicidal maniacs. The Navy is supposed to ferret out and defend against seafaring threats, domestic and abroad. So, I find major fault with the design and theme of our nations Navy flying the colors of criminals. I'm certain there are better themes from the Navy and Marines that don't promote Piracy
You might consider educating yourself before spouting off. It’s not just a generic pirate theme, it’s to commemorate a Naval fighter squadron known as the Jolly Rogers. They have quite the illustrious record dating back to World War II.Imo, the Navy helmet is just wrong. Pirates were deserters, who prayed on the defenseless merchant ships. Thanks for the history lesson. While that does lend credence and merit to the theme, I think the optics are bad to the lay person. It's an easy misunderstanding and one that errs on the side of Google for explanation. I imagine most would require the explainer to make the connection you aspire toYou might consider educating yourself before spouting off. The military, including the academies, doesn’t often do stuff just for the vibes.
I don’t know that someone who didn’t give it any thought at all would arrive at the conclusion you did. They’d probably just go, “Oh, that looks cool,” and move on.Thanks for the history lesson. Fair and thoughtful. I would add that if/when the USNA put out their marketing campaign, to include the abundance of related info, I would deduce that to say it was a preemptive attempt to intercept any misunderstanding, such as I suggested. Nevertheless, as you pointed out, it was for a greater cause and inspiration, and the attention and proceeds went to the good guys regardless. Good chatting and respectI don’t know that someone who didn’t give it any thought at all would arrive at the conclusion you did. They’d probably just go, “Oh, that looks cool,” and move on.
The USNA put a lot out there about the inspiration for the uniform, both on social media as well as the broadcast for the game. Not sure what more they realistically could have done, so we may just be at an impasse (ie you think it was fundamentally uncool and I think it’s fundamentally very cool) which is fine. Have a good one.
