Volunteers look for improvement over bye week

Thanks WW. Seeing a little more of the young talent would be encouraging.

I agree whole-heartedly with WW's "you can fix mechanics not youth" point.

At the same time, I don't believe that our problems are, ultimately, either youth or a breakdown in mechanics.

For over a decade the only psychological preparation and mid-game leadership the Vols have gotten has been from players. Worse, Fulmer has stated, repeatedly, that "players not showing up" is their fault, not his- declaring in effect that psychological preparation is not his responsibility and he doesn't plan to do anything to improve it.

These aren't the Knute Rockne days, when a coach can be held responsible for doing everything. Everyone knows this, however, and that means any coach worth 1/2 a damn knows that they are responsible for hiring a coaching team which provides what they can't personally do themselves.

That's my problem with Fulmer. He refuses to evolve and adapt. He's a brilliant recruiter and developer of physical talent. Apparently, he thinks if you're brilliant in a couple of ways, and your crude statistics are good, you don't have to worry about all the other factors it takes- in the real world- to be a great coach.

You realize, of course, that you will get a debate with that assesment, right?

Unless we brought in a new coaching staff, don't expect to see any improvement. We play worse coming off bye weeks, which is an indication of how poorly coached this team is. We'll talk a good game. We ALWAYS talk a good game. We just don't play good games.

I heard Doug Matthews today talking about the only way to improve tackling is to go full speed all the time and thats something you cant do in practice ,the only way to improve is in the games is what Matthews said.

One thing that might be in our favor is we dont play any more teams that run the spread until we get to Kentucky, we do better against teams that play that old smash mouth style.

I don't think they have to go full speed to practice wrapping up on a tackle.
That's my issue they come up and put a shoulder on someone, and don't wrap up.
