Jones said after Tuesday’s practice on Haslam Field that sophomore safety Nigel Warrior...is having a spring to remember. The son of former Vols and NFL star Dale Carter had 22 tackles last season while playing mostly on special teams, but injuries to veterans Micah Abernathy, Evan Berry and Rashaan Gaulden have allowed Warrior to take virtually all the first-team reps alongside Todd Kelly Jr., and several players and coaches — including Jones — have enjoyed watching the highly touted Atlanta-area native blossom. “Nigel has had as good a spring as anyone we’ve had,” Jones said.

Jones was positive about the secondary as a whole, as well, despite injuries keeping several players sidelined.

Butch has been high on warrior since day one. If Butch truley knows, then warrior should have a good year.

Nigel Warrior should start over TKjr now that he's learned the playbook.

Simply a better athlete. We desperately need to get more athletic on the back end.

TkJr should start, it's not his athleticism that's a problem. It's his aggressiveness or lack of, that causes him to look slow at times. Jmo

Warrior is the best Defensive back on the team. Maybe even the best defensive player or player on the team .

I did not know that Warrior was Dale Carter's son. DC is one of my all time favorite UT DBs. He's certainly got the DNA to play football.

TKjr has regressed. He was a weak link on the defense last year because of his lack of speed and athleticism.

I love his instincts but we need better athletes on defense if we want to compete for championships.

there were a few games TK was all over the field. He was no weak link

I think this thread speaks to what's frustrating about TKJR. IMO everyone here is just about spot on. TKJR can look like the best player on the defense and he can also look slow and even intimidated. He looks like he should be a LB one game, a SS another and a div II fs another. Coming out I thought he was going to be a lb, but some guys don't have the frame or make-up for playing in the box, in the sec, every down. He knows the game and the reads inside and out, he should be the quickest to diagnose plays and slip blocks but if he's a reluctant tackler then you obviously have to keep him away from the line and his speed isn't a strength. It doesn't need to be, but it's part of why some have wanted to see him at LB. The undersized Chavis lb is all the rage these days of 3-4 wr sets,

We don't need "quarterbacks on the defense" we need killers on the defense.

Foster was the best lb in the country and he couldn't tell anyone what anybody is supposed to do on defense on any play, he just plays fast and blows things up -- we've been missing that.

I'd love to see Gaulden and Warrior in the back. Gaulden has some Budda Baker in his game, he wasn't as highly recruited but he's not far off as an athlete, I'd love to see us use him similarly. Tangentially, I hope we disguise Gauldens blitzes a bit more in year 2 of Shoopin.

TKJR is oddly inconsistent.

He'll end up a backup and Jones will make an excuse

I thought it was his lack of physicality that would hold him back. Then last year happened and I realized how slow he is. TEs were beating him up and down the field especially the freshman from UGA.
