It's at 5. That sort of seems right if the Bears would win. It could be a 3 then a late FG to make 6, or a Cal go ahead TD.

But the Vols are going to be ready, and without a doubt have a better team.

Cal does not have much of a home field advantage, and if your a SEC team playing outside conference, there isn't much of a difference with opponent stadiums and nothing to be intimitaded.

The Vols should be able to stop Cal all game, and it will come down to Cal winning through favorable field posistion. Tennesee has a great punter and should out punt Cals punter by 15 yard net.

So where I stand on this game with our team - we should win this game by a TD or 10 points.

So taking +5 is like stealing candy from a baby

Your post illustrates a general lack of knowledge.

The author of this thread didn't make it clear who is +5. If Cal is favored to win they would be -5 and Tennessee would be +5 meaning that Tennessee gets 5 points added onto the final score so Cal would have to win by 6 to win the money. If they win by 5 it's a tie or push bet and if they win by 4 people betting on Tennessee win the money because they received 5 points at the beginning of the game. Of course if the Vols win the game it's a moot point.

Tennessee +5 is a steal. The line should be less than a fieldgoal either way and close to a pick 'em. Win, lose, or push, that would be a bad line.

ahh thats too confusing

It is correct, if confusing. Games are bet as if the teams are even, paying even money on a bet. To make it even, in this case, Tennessee would get five points to make the game even, making Cal a 5 pt favorite.

I assumed because he was talking about Cal being favored that it was UT +5.

Guys... there is no official line. Each book can come up with any line they like. Their goal is to come up with a line that will see an equal amount of money on both sides. Usually for football games the books are all within 1 point of each other, but there are cases when you can find some different lines out there. I have seen the vols getting between 5.5 to 4 points.

I thought the line would be about 3 points... but I believe the higher spread is based on the way the teams finished last season.

by game time i would expect a line of Cal -3, you may see a slight difference in the east or south as some bookies do make minor changes to effect certain team areas with rabid fans, i.e. us vol folks, bama, etc. if vols are favored nationally by 4 you might see a line of 5 or even 6 in vol territory. lines are set to engage bettors, books want about a 60 40 split, which guarantees their money, which they always get. my best guess is cal will be a 2 to 3 point favor come ballgame weekend. i do not gamble although used to play a few games years ago. go vols just win and everything else will fall in place.:dance2:

I think a +5 line is a little on the high side, but it's not really shocking. You've got to figure that homefield alone is worth 4 or 5 points.

I'm curious -- where are folks seeing these lines? I'd like to start working on the sheet for the first weekend of my football pool.
