KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee men's basketball team will face Virginia in its first game of the newly-named Continental Tire Baha Mar Championship, as announced Friday morning by BdG Sports.

The Volunteers and Cavaliers will tip off Nov. 21 at 9:30 p.m., following the preceding 7 p.m. matchup between Baylor and St. John's. Action will take place at the Baha Mar Convention, Arts & Entertainment Center, located on the grounds of the stunning Baha Mar resort in Nassau, Bahamas.

"We are excited for the chance to take on an elite program like Virginia to begin play at Baha Mar," Tennessee head coach Rick Barnes said. "Whether we meet Baylor or St. John's in our next game, it will be a second major challenge in as many days against a tremendous team with a top-notch coach. This event will be a great opportunity for our team to face big-time competition in a tournament setting at a beautiful location."

The winners of the first-round affairs meet the next day, Nov. 22, in the title game at 9:30 p.m., while the losers square off beforehand in the consolation affair at 7 p.m. The entire tournament will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

Well this game certainly has changed now. Bennett is a tremendous coach and even better person. Will be interesting to see what the reasoning is behind his retirement. But this game just got significantly easier for the Vols in my opinion.

I’d reckon that it hasn’t been easy to lure top recruits to Bennett’s grind it out, defense first style of play. No matter how much NIL $s UVa has to throw at players, most don’t want to play in a system where games in the 70s are high scoring.

NIL seems to be the main reason after scanning through the ESPN article today.

Watched his press conference. Definitely related to NIL but think honestly more related to the portal. His system really needed players playing together for years, and not being able to keep that cohesiveness with the way the portal is and kids coming and going I think he realized it would be next to impossible to repeat a National championship like 2019 again. I have actually met him a few times and just a very kind and humble man. But things just aren’t the way they used to be in college sports any longer so you need coaches that can adapt or need to get out of the way. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is now and that toothpaste ain’t going to be put back in the tube. Looking forward to the upcoming season. GBO!!!!

His style simply doesn’t work in today’s game. They don’t get to the foul line enough to make up for not taking threes. Zero margin of error, so players play tight. Without a stud offensive player to paper over that deficit, you get what we saw last year in the tournament.

Besides the NIL/portal discussions think there are some issues within the UVA athletic dept in play. Perhaps related to his successors as UVA head coach and the assistant coaches.

I also watched his press conference and thought he brought up some interesting points about the state of college basketball.
